Principal Architect – AI Builder

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Recognize high-impact AI use cases throughout CVS Health and develop them into products that have a well-defined scope, user requirements, and criteria for success.

• Design and construct each AI system comprehensively, encompassing retrieval, agent orchestration, tool and MCP integration, evaluation frameworks, observability, and human-in-the-loop transitions.

• Draft product specifications, design documents, and architecture decision records for the AI products you oversee.

• Create production implementations utilizing AI coding agents, ensuring rigorous testing, review, and observability.

• Collaborate with platform and system owners to seamlessly integrate AI applications with enterprise platforms, identity, and data services.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 12 years of experience in software engineering and architecture, progressing from developer to enterprise architect to applied AI builder.

• More than 8 years of experience operating at the architectural level with a proven history of systems designed, built, and deployed.

• At least 2 years of experience in building and deploying production AI applications utilizing LLMs, agentic systems, RAG, MCP, and evaluation frameworks.

• Practical experience with a major foundation model provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, AWS Bedrock, or Azure OpenAI) and proficiency in at least one agent framework (LangGraph, CrewAI, OpenAI Agents SDK, Semantic Kernel/MAF).

• Proficient in Python and at least one additional production language (TypeScript, Java, Go, or similar).

• Strong understanding of system design principles across distributed systems, APIs, cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP), data pipelines, and enterprise integration patterns.

• Sharp product instinct: capable of determining what to build, scoping it, and independently drafting the specification.

• A demonstrated history of AI applications successfully delivered to production with methodical evaluation, testing, and monitoring.

• Excellent communication skills, able to convey ideas clearly to both engineers and senior leadership.
