Platform Engineer – Bare Metal

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +32 more states.

📋 Description

• Design and construct the next-generation bare metal deployment pipeline to achieve provisioning times under 60 seconds.

• Develop and sustain Vultr’s automation and management toolkit for bare metal.

• Execute automated firmware update processes across the bare metal fleet utilizing IPMI/BMC protocols.

• Create and enhance kexec-based rapid boot and provisioning workflows to reduce deployment latency.

• Integrate cloud-init and instance metadata services for bare metal, ensuring uniform configuration across VM and BM products.

• Develop Puppet and Ansible modules for the configuration and lifecycle management of bare metal servers.

• Design and implement VPC networking for bare metal instances, incorporating network attachment and routing automation.

• Collaborate with the Provisioning and Orchestration teams to unify OS image pipelines, ensuring seamless integration of bare metal with Vultr’s reservation and assignment systems.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 3 years of experience in platform engineering, systems engineering, or infrastructure automation.

• Practical experience with bare metal server provisioning, including IPMI/BMC, PXE boot, and firmware management.

• Strong skills in Linux systems engineering, with a deep understanding of the boot process, initramfs, kernel command line, and device configuration.

• Proficiency in PHP for backend service development within a LAMP environment.

• Familiarity with Rust is a plus.

• Experience with Redfish (or similar tools).

• Background in building or maintaining instance metadata services or cloud-init integrations.

• Knowledge of automated configuration management tools (Puppet, Ansible, or equivalent).

• Capability to troubleshoot hardware and software issues across the entire stack, from BMC firmware to the application layer, along with strong communication skills for cross-team collaboration in a remote setting.
