This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Connecticut, +20 more states.
• Supervise the payroll tax specialist team, including managing workloads, providing performance coaching, conducting training, and ensuring quality oversight.
• Oversee monthly bookkeeping related to payroll tax transactions and reconcile general ledger accounts with billing records, tax reports, and bank statements.
• Assist staff in researching and interpreting state-specific tax laws applicable to employers and workers.
• Create, implement, and maintain procedures to ensure adherence to federal and state payroll tax laws and regulations.
• Manage state and federal registrations to establish individuals as employers and facilitate timely tax and labor reporting.
• Ensure client tax accounts remain compliant and assist with issue resolution.
• Direct the establishment of employer-of-record arrangements with state and federal agencies, including the preparation of agent appointment letters and assignments of tax identification numbers.
• Lead research initiatives and develop procedures for new state-driven tax reporting processes.
• Ensure the timely filing of tax deposits and reports, which include SUTA, state income tax reports, Forms 941, 940, W-2, W-3, 1099, and 1096.
• Oversee the prompt payment of taxes and garnishments.
• Review workers’ compensation reconciliations and supervise the annual insurance audit information.
• Create budget projections for workers’ compensation and other tax-related expenses.
• Manage audits, reviews, year-end closings, and tax report preparation projects.
• Generate accounting-related reports.
• Document accounting procedures while maintaining accuracy and compliance standards.
• Suggest and lead improvements in processes and workflows.
• Conduct regular quality reviews of data and staff performance.
• Ensure the confidentiality of sensitive information.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in bookkeeping, accounting, payroll tax processing, or a related area.
• Experience in staff supervision or leadership roles.
• Prior experience with preparing and filing Forms W-2, W-3, 1099, 1096, 941, and 940.
• Strong understanding of payroll, payroll taxes, general ledgers, and accounting or bookkeeping principles.
• Proficiency in accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and general computer systems.
• Ability to interpret rules, analyze data, draw logical conclusions, and assist others in problem-solving.
• Proven leadership abilities, including coaching, delegation, and accountability.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Self-motivated mindset with the capability to drive process excellence.
• Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field is preferred; an Accounting major is strongly preferred (but not required).
