Payment Application Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Record insurance and patient payments in Epic and adjust postings according to bank deposits.

• Process electronic remittance files and manually handle paper remittances.

• Investigate and resolve issues related to outstanding deposits, unidentified payments, missing payments, payment errors, and incorrect account routing.

• Reconcile patient payments and other payment sources with patient accounting and financial systems.

• Create, input, and allocate cash management batches.

• Open and distribute correspondence from post offices and financial institutions.

• Communicate with payors, business entities, financial institutions, insurers, and employers to address payment concerns and verify eligibility, benefits, and payment details.

• Complete and reconcile bank deposits on a daily basis and review postings on a monthly basis.

• Process refunds and recover overpayments for third-party payors and guarantors.

• Oversee special billing protocols, unclaimed property, work queues, and incorrect hospital payments.

• Maintain spreadsheets and reports related to unclaimed property and bulk refunds.

• Provide support for registration, customer service, cashiering, coding, accounting, and Revenue Cycle teams.

• Stay informed about payor provisions and local, state, and federal collection laws.

⛳️ Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent required.

• At least one year of experience in medical billing or a medical office preferred.

• Experience in bookkeeping and cash balancing.

• Ability to remain seated for extended periods.

• Proficient reading and comprehension abilities.

• Visual acuity within standard range.

• Manual dexterity to operate keyboards, fax machines, telephones, and various business equipment.

• Strong oral and written communication skills.

• Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.

• Knowledge of third-party payers preferred.

• Understanding of business mathematics preferred.

• Familiarity with ICD-10 and CPT coding processes preferred.

• Exceptional customer service skills and telephone etiquette.

• Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy.

• Understanding of patient accounting principles and procedures.

• Proficient computer skills.

• Current knowledge of online banking systems.
