This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Abstract primary sites for both analytic and non-analytic cases into the NF-KACI Oncology software by utilizing pathology reports, ARIA, EPIC, and ModMed Dermatology.
• Implement defensive abstracting techniques along with approved edits software to guarantee error-free submissions to the New York State Cancer Registry and NCDB.
• Abstract extensive datasets and RCRS cases, identify reportable instances, and execute computerized case-finding programs.
• Evaluate and analyze hospital, computerized, and medical reports to classify demographics, primary site, histology, stage, and treatment details.
• Utilize AJCC, TNM, ICD-O, SEER, SSDI, Hematopoietic Database, SEER*Rx, Solid Tumor Rules, and additional relevant coding and staging manuals.
• Update post-abstraction treatment information and code recurrence patterns, recurrent disease, subsequent treatments, and causes of death.
• Engage in quality reviews, department projects, virtual cancer conferences, and departmental meetings.
• Abstract patients discussed during cancer conferences and prepare synopses for discussion.
• Employ Windows applications and Information Systems for data input, analysis, and retrieval.
• Research and compile lifelong follow-up histories detailing disease status, condition, and treatment.
• Communicate with physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare institutions via telephone, email, and fax to gather follow-up information.
• Utilize internet resources such as the Social Security Death Index, telephone directories, and newspaper obituaries for patient follow-up.
• Deliver presentations upon request and fulfill other related responsibilities as assigned.
• High School diploma or GED is mandatory.
• Current Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification from NCRA is required, or eligibility through an approved pathway, with the capability to obtain certification within 3 years of initial employment.
• Route 1: Completion of an NCRA-accredited Associate Degree Program in Cancer Registry Management, which includes necessary practicum activities and competency assessments.
• Route 2: Associate degree or at least 60 college-level credits, along with completion of an NCRA-accredited Certificate Program in Cancer Registry Management, including required practicum activities and competency assessments.
• Route 3: Associate degree or a minimum of 60 college-level credits, including at least two semesters/six credit hours of Human Anatomy and Human Physiology with a grade of C or higher, plus a minimum of 1,950 hours/equivalent to one year of full-time cancer registry experience.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Commission on Cancer standards, state cancer registry reporting requirements, and RCRS guidelines.
• Familiarity with anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Proven experience utilizing computerized systems for data abstraction, data entry, analysis, and report preparation.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Capability to navigate internet-based applications and electronic reporting systems.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
• Competence in meeting deadlines and prioritizing workloads.
• Strong decision-making and judgment abilities.
• Ability to work independently and autonomously.
• Proficient in medical terminology language.
