Health Data Analyst Intern

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Assist the Commence Data team with entry-level analytics and data quality tasks.

• Help with data profiling and quality assessments on designated healthcare datasets.

• Write and execute basic SQL queries or simple Python or R scripts under guidance.

• Prepare descriptive summary tables, counts, and straightforward charts.

• Contribute to the creation of a data dictionary and documentation entries.

• Research and summarize CMS quality measure specifications or program documentation.

• Support a defined analysis or documentation project and present findings to the team.

• Engage in team working sessions to understand how healthcare data flows through Commence programs.

• Complete onboarding, security awareness, and HIPAA privacy training prior to gaining data access.

• Adhere to data handling, privacy, and security policies.

• Document methodologies and results for review and reproducibility.

• Attend regular check-ins and provide consistent status updates.

• Maintain a mutually agreed-upon schedule throughout the duration.

⛳️ Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program in public health, health informatics, biostatistics, epidemiology, data science, statistics, economics, or a related discipline.

• Completed coursework in statistics, data analysis, or database fundamentals.

• Basic proficiency in SQL and Microsoft Excel.

• Introductory experience with Python or R.

• Strong written communication skills and demonstrated attention to detail.

• Capable of documenting work for reproducibility by others.

• Able to comply with data handling, privacy, and security protocols.

• Legally authorized to work in the United States.

• Must successfully pass a background check.

• Required to complete onboarding, security awareness, and HIPAA privacy training before obtaining data access.

• Must utilize Commence-provided accounts and approved equipment.

• Company data must not be stored on personal devices or personal cloud accounts.

• Access to protected health information, if necessary, requires HIPAA training and documented, role-based approval.

• Preferred: familiarity with Medicare or Medicaid claims data, CMS programs, or healthcare quality measures.

• Preferred: exposure to Databricks, Snowflake, Power BI, or Tableau.

• Preferred: prior training in HIPAA or human subjects research.

• Preferred: coursework or project experience in health services research, health policy, or population health analytics.
