Observation Coder

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• The Coder is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation to accurately assign and sequence diagnostic and procedural codes for Facility Observation records, ensuring the hospital's data retrieval needs for billing and reimbursement are met.

• The Coder conducts documentation reviews and assessments to ensure precise abstraction of clinical data in compliance with regulatory requirements.

• Interaction with client staff and healthcare providers may be part of the Coder's responsibilities.

• The Coder will select and sequence ICD-10 CM and CPT codes for designated patient types, which may include but are not limited to: Acute Facility Observation for Non-Teaching Level facilities.

• Clinical records will be reviewed and analyzed to ensure accurate CPT assignment and appropriate use of modifiers.

• The Coder will abstract clinical data from records after reviewing documentation to confirm it is sufficient and suitable to support diagnoses and procedures.

• Assigned work functions must be completed using the appropriate resources.

• The Coder may serve as a resource for client staff regarding data integrity, offering clarification and assistance in understanding and applying appropriate and compliant coding practices, including provider queries.

⛳️ Requirements

• An active credential from AHIMA (American Health Information Association), such as RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or an active credential from AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) including COC (formerly CPC-H), CCS-P, CPC, or a related specialty credential.

• A minimum of two (2) years of recent and relevant hands-on coding experience across all record types, specifically Observation.
