This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Conduct research, compose, and refine a regular email newsletter that aligns with fern’s editorial focus.
• Create exclusive reporting and behind-the-scenes articles that complement — instead of duplicating — fern’s YouTube content.
• Generate new perspectives and insights on the videos published by fern, highlighting details, sources, and context that were not included in the final versions.
• Craft compelling, attention-grabbing subject lines, engaging opening hooks, and well-structured narratives optimized for open rates, engagement, and read-through.
• Convert intricate subjects related to true crime, geopolitics, history, science, technology, and society into accessible and captivating written storytelling.
• Utilize briefs, internal research, and existing long-form content to produce original newsletter editions and relevant adaptations.
• Collaborate with Editors, Researchers, and Producers to ensure that newsletter stories uphold fern’s journalistic standards and visual storytelling.
• Refine editions based on feedback and performance metrics (open rates, click-through rates, subscriber growth).
• Keep abreast of newsletter trends, formats, and best practices in email communication.
• Participate in occasional ideation for branded content as needed.
• Proficiency in the English language (essential).
• A background in journalism, documentary production, or factual storytelling.
• Demonstrated experience in producing high-performing written content — preferably newsletters, longform digital journalism, or features.
• Strong grasp of subject-line creation, pacing, and reader retention strategies for email.
• Capability to distill complex topics while maintaining accuracy and nuance.
• A genuine interest in true crime and geopolitics, combined with curiosity about history, science, technology, and society.
• Excellent research skills and meticulous attention to factual accuracy, including sourcing, fact-checking, and responsibly handling sensitive topics.
• Ability to work efficiently and produce high-quality work within limited time frames.
• Strong communication abilities and a knack for collaborating with remote teams.
• Experience in writing for or producing investigative, educational, or documentary-style content.
