This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado, +2 more states.
• Direct, mentor, and cultivate a team of engineers, designers, and technical specialists focused on substation physical engineering.
• Oversee staffing, recruitment, hiring, workload forecasting, and resource distribution within the department.
• Ensure the safe, timely, and budget-compliant delivery of substation engineering projects while meeting quality standards.
• Provide technical guidance and strategic oversight for intricate substation projects spanning from distribution to EHV transmission voltage levels.
• Develop and enhance engineering standards, QA/QC protocols, design methodologies, and operational processes.
• Take responsibility for the department's operational effectiveness, utilization rates, backlog management, staffing predictions, revenue objectives, profitability, and financial results.
• Collaborate with project managers and business leaders to track project performance, mitigate risks, address resource limitations, and resolve issues related to schedule, budget, and quality.
• Foster relationships with utility clients, contractors, equipment suppliers, and industry collaborators.
• Assist in project pursuits, proposal crafting, scope definition, contract negotiations, and initiatives aimed at client satisfaction.
• Recognize opportunities for business growth, service enhancement, and market exploration.
• Advocate for safety, quality, compliance, and professional development initiatives.
• Provide executive oversight on substation physical design, grounding, lightning protection, AC station service, equipment selection, major equipment specifications, constructability reviews, and engineering evaluations.
• Facilitate the adoption of advanced engineering technologies, digital design workflows, 3D modeling, and continuous improvement strategies.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related engineering field.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
• A minimum of 12 years of experience in substation engineering, design, analysis, or related power delivery services.
• At least 12 years of experience collaborating with electric utilities, EPC firms, or engineering consulting organizations.
• Proven experience in managing multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Demonstrated success in managing project portfolios, resource allocation, and financial outcomes.
• Extensive knowledge of substation physical design principles, including layout, grounding, lightning protection, AC station service, conduit systems, equipment selection, and constructability factors.
• Experience leading engineering projects from distribution substations to transmission voltage levels up to 765kV.
• Willingness to travel for client presentations, site visits, industry conferences, and project evaluations.
• Proven track record in recruiting, developing, and retaining engineering professionals.
• Experience in business development, client relationship management, and proposal crafting.
• Familiarity with establishing engineering standards, QA/QC programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Strong understanding of consulting business operations, including utilization management, revenue forecasting, backlog management, and departmental financial performance.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering efforts with protection & controls, civil, structural, relay, communications, permitting, environmental, procurement, and construction stakeholders.
• Working knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NEC, ANSI, NERC, and utility-specific design standards.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, Autodesk Inventor, Vault, or other substation design software.
• Experience with substation grounding studies and tools like CDEGS.
• Experience using illumination analysis software such as AGi32.
• Experience supporting construction, commissioning, field engineering, and outage planning tasks.
• Proficient in developing and writing client proposals, including scope definition, staffing plans, schedules, fee estimates, risk assessments, and contract negotiations.
• Experience leading extensive substation expansion, greenfield, modernization, and grid resiliency initiatives for utility clients.
