This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.
• You will collaborate with our systems and security team on various client projects.
• The team consists of 2 to 5 engineers working together on each project.
• Your role will involve designing, hardening, and delivering Linux-based system software - encompassing kernel and userspace components as well as secure boot chains, TPM integration, and attestation - all aligned with and contributed back to the community.
• Your objective is to influence the security of this ecosystem alongside us and detach from the proprietary realm. At 9elements, our shared mission is to revolutionize how secure systems are constructed and establish open-source as the benchmark for reliable computing.
• You are well-versed in (Embedded) Linux - comfortable building, debugging, and deploying Linux systems, from the kernel to drivers and up through userspace, with the ability to read and write source code.
• You prioritize security - considering threat models, attack surfaces, and trust boundaries, aiming to create systems that are secure by design rather than relying on hope.
• You possess the ability to dive deep into technical challenges - your passion for code drives you to debug issues down to the core, which may sometimes involve hardware.
• You are proficient in English - as our business language, proficiency in English is essential for both internal and external communication.
• You enjoy working with Open-Source - while this may seem straightforward, collaborating with open-source communities can present challenges. You need to be able to identify the best solutions for our customers and the community.
• You are committed - at 9elements, we support one another. Our mission is ambitious: we aim to transform the firmware industry, which requires dedication and teamwork to dismantle and rebuild the ecosystem from the ground up.
• Experience with Linux Kernel Development and Hypervisors - if you have worked with KVM, Xen, or smaller research hypervisors and understand virtualization at a fundamental level, we would love to hear from you.
• Practical knowledge of TPMs, secure boot, measured boot, or remote attestation.
• Familiarity with Yocto, Buildroot, or custom distributions for embedded targets.
• Low-level languages are your forte - proficiency in C is essential, and knowledge of Rust is a bonus.
• Opportunities to attend industry conferences such as OCP EMEA/Global Summit/Linux Plumbers and more.
• Participation in our own conference - the Open-Source Firmware Conference (https://www.osfc.io).
• Choose your platform: Lenovo or Framework? We have you covered! Want to run Arch? Absolutely. Select the platform that allows you to work most effectively.
• Fully remote work: Although our headquarters are in Germany and all hardware is located in our labs here, you can work from anywhere in the world, enabling you to develop remotely.
• Flexible schedule: We require your working hours to overlap for a few hours with German working hours. Beyond that, you have the freedom to shape your work schedule as needed, as long as the job gets done.
