
Legal Intern, Detained Adult Program – Direct Representation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia.
• Support our team in advocating for detained clients during their immigration proceedings.
• Perform legal research and drafting to aid detained clients seeking relief in immigration court.
• Carry out tailored research on country conditions and gather primary evidence to assist detained clients in their relief applications before the Immigration Court.
• Help in the preparation and submission of immigration relief applications.
• Provide assistance with legal research and case preparation for habeas corpus relief in federal courts.
• Offer interpretation and translation support when possible.
• Communicate with clients and their families through telephone interactions.
• Attend court hearings and/or visit clients who are in detention.
• Must be currently enrolled in law school.
• Able to commit to 15-20 hours per week.
• Strong passion for human rights, social justice, and immigration rights issues.
• Excellent research and writing capabilities.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Possess intellectual curiosity.
• Willingness to engage with individuals from low-income communities who may have criminal backgrounds and/or mental health challenges.
• Fluency in Spanish or another language is highly preferred.
• Internships are unpaid; however, Amica Center can assist students in obtaining internship credit.
• A limited number of small scholarship stipends are available through a separate application process.
