This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado, +3 more states.
• Lead and manage the design and creation of physical design drawings for substations, which include: Substation One Line and Three Line diagrams, General Arrangements & Sections, Electrical Details, Grounding Plans & Details, Conduit Plans & Details, Control Cubicle Layouts, Sections, Cable Tray layouts, Lighting and Grounding, Low-Voltage AC Panels, Lightning Protection, and Illumination Plans & Details.
• Direct the design and preparation of engineering studies such as: AC Load assessments, Illumination studies, Grounding evaluations, and Lightning Shielding analyses.
• Develop a Bill of Materials based on established Design Criteria.
• Coordinate with protection & controls, civil/structural, and drafting teams to ensure high-quality deliverables.
• Assist in client meetings, technical discussions, and project planning activities.
• Engage in site visits and conduct constructability reviews.
• Interpret and integrate vendor information into design outputs.
• Adhere to client standards pertaining to the work.
• Ensure that the company’s Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) processes are implemented across all design packages.
• Guarantee compliance with industry codes (e.g., IEEE, NESC, NEC) and utility standards.
• Focus on continuous enhancement of job-related engineering, technical, and professional knowledge, skills, and performance.
• Mentor and support junior engineers and designers.
• Exhibit leadership potential to facilitate the transition into a Supervising Engineer role.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a focus on power systems.
• Over 8 years of experience in substation physical design for electric utilities.
• Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license or the capability to obtain one within 6 months.
• Proficient in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or a similar design software.
• Knowledge of substation design standards and practices (IEEE, NESC, utility specifications).
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
• Aptitude for managing multiple projects and mentoring junior staff.
• Strong initiative and leadership skills to support career progression.
• Experience in leading substation projects modeled in 3D using Autodesk Inventor.
• Familiarity with substation grounding studies and CDEGS.
• Knowledge of Agi32 illumination software.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft products, particularly Word and Excel.
