Lead Substation Engineer 2 – Grid

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Utilize expertise in protective relaying and control systems for High Voltage (HV) and Extra High Voltage (EHV) substations.

• Engage in modifications and upgrades of substations, which include performing calculations, documenting designs, and creating specifications.

• Formulate relaying philosophies; select relay, control, and communication devices; develop SCADA and telecommunications frameworks and configurations; supervise I/O assignments and connection schematics.

• Mentor engineers and designers in protection and controls engineering design while coordinating detailed design phases.

• Examine, troubleshoot, and resolve engineering challenges.

• Evaluate and design single-line diagrams, substation relaying and metering diagrams, as well as AC and DC schematic diagrams.

• Compile engineering studies for client and peer assessment.

• Conduct independent reviews of calculations and drawings completed by others.

• Collaborate with engineers, project managers, client representatives, and suppliers to provide comprehensive and timely designs.

• Assess current facilities and recommend upgrades and replacements; deliver findings and proposals.

• Contribute knowledge through Sargent & Lundy’s Communities of Practice.

• Provide mentorship to junior engineers.

• May require travel to client and vendor locations for design reviews and to construction sites for coordination and field verification.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering is required.

• A minimum of 12 years of experience in designing substations at 138kV and higher.

• Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license.

• Experience acting as a firm/client liaison in a support or leading engineering capacity.

• Proficient in creating and providing documentation for relay calculations.

• Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles necessary for generating technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

• Proficient in software such as SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, CDEGS, or other vendor-specific programs.

• Familiarity with NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI standards.

• Experience with various vendor protective relay equipment, including SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, and Basler.

• Competence in using MS Office applications.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.

• Must not require employer sponsorship for work authorization within the U.S.

• A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred but not mandatory.

• An ABET-accredited engineering degree is appreciated but not essential.

• Prior experience with inline, bus and equipment protection; control of breakers, transformers, and similar equipment; RTU and data-concentrator SCADA systems; telemetering and communications is advantageous.

• Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation is beneficial but not mandatory.

• Construction and start-up experience is considered beneficial but not required.

• Testing or commissioning experience is advantageous but not essential.

• Willingness or capability to lead others utilizing data, automation, AI, and advanced engineering tools.

• Ability to manage engineering automation and agentic AI workflows while ensuring outputs are verified is valued.

• Oversight experience in Python, MATLAB, or advanced Excel scripting is considered advantageous but not required.
