Lead Engineer – Reporting, BI Engineering

Posted Jun 20

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Act as the technical leader for your scrum team, making daily engineering decisions, establishing code quality standards, and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality reporting solutions.

• Write, review, and produce production-grade code across the BI and reporting stack, including SQL, Oracle, and the application tier, while being an active, hands-on team member.

• Facilitate sprint ceremonies as the scrum master, including planning, refinement, daily standups, demos, and retrospectives.

• Set daily priorities for the team, actively working to unblock teammates by resolving dependencies, clarifying requirements, and addressing technical uncertainties.

• Ensure accountability to engineering standards within the team, focusing on query performance benchmarks, code review discipline, definition of done, and release readiness.

• Analyze and enhance poorly performing SQL, such as real-time data cube queries against non-flattened hierarchical data models, transforming them into optimized, maintainable, production-quality solutions.

• Lead initiatives for Oracle query tuning and optimization, including execution plan analysis, indexing strategies, materialized views, partitioning, and read-optimization techniques.

• Design and promote reporting data models and query architectures optimized for BI consumption, minimizing real-time computation overhead and enhancing report responsiveness.

• Establish SQL quality standards for the team and drive the adoption of query review practices and performance benchmarks as part of the definition of done.

• Advocate for achieving ≥50% AI-authored pull request targets and ≥95% AI code review adoption as minimum organizational standards for your team.

• Exemplify an agentic development mindset by integrating AI tools into your daily workflow and actively coaching teammates to follow suit.

• Encourage the team to exceed baseline AI adoption, implementing workflows and practices that significantly enhance delivery speed and reporting quality.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8-10+ years of practical software engineering experience with a strong focus on BI, reporting, and SQL development within enterprise SaaS environments.

• Extensive knowledge of Oracle SQL and PL/SQL, including query tuning, execution plan optimization, indexing strategies, materialized views, and large dataset performance enhancement.

• Proven experience diagnosing and reconstructing poorly performing SQL against intricate, non-flattened relational data models, including optimizing real-time reporting queries.

• Hands-on experience with enterprise BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Cognos, or similar, with the capability to design effective reporting solutions for complex data models.

• Proven track record in a technical lead or lead engineer role, which includes setting priorities, conducting ceremonies, and holding team members accountable.

• Demonstrated AI-first engineering approach, with hands-on experience in agentic development tools (such as GitHub Copilot, Devin.AI, or similar) and a history of promoting AI adoption within an engineering team.

• Experience with direct management responsibilities, including performance feedback, career development, and team engagement for a small group of engineers.

• Familiarity with the Microsoft technology stack, including C#, .NET, and Azure cloud services, enabling participation in full-stack technical discussions.

• Strong code review discipline and adherence to engineering quality standards, such as SQL reviews, query performance benchmarking, and rigorous definitions of done.

• Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging credibly and directly with client stakeholders regarding complex reporting requirements and clearly translating technical realities.

• Experience collaborating in global, distributed teams across different time zones.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
