Lead Engineer, IoT & Device Messaging

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ohio.

📋 Description

• Influence the future of interconnected healthcare operations

• Develop large-scale IoT and middleware systems that facilitate automated prescription fulfillment from order intake to patient delivery

• Create systems that support pharmacy counting, packaging, and robotic dispensing processes

• Design and construct distributed, real-time, or high-throughput production systems

• Build scalable .NET and C# services, microservices, and service architectures

• Collaborate on device identity, provisioning, digital twins, fleet-scale device management, telemetry, connectivity management, and OTA updates

• Implement MQTT and gRPC messaging frameworks

• Design for delivery assurances, message sequencing, backpressure, reliability, and high-throughput processing

• Utilize idempotency, deduplication, transactional outbox, retry mechanisms, dead-letter handling, partitioning, and ordering methodologies

• Construct and manage cloud-native systems utilizing Kubernetes, containers, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD, and observability

• Enforce security protocols, including mTLS, OAuth 2.0/OIDC, secrets management, and threat modeling

• Report directly to the Senior Director of Enterprise Architecture

• Willingness to travel 50%

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field

• Over 10 years of professional experience in software engineering

• At least 4 years of experience in designing and building distributed, real-time, or high-throughput production systems

• Extensive hands-on knowledge of .NET and C#, including asynchronous programming, performance enhancement, microservices, and scalable service architectures

• Familiarity with IoT and connected device ecosystems

• Experience in device identity and provisioning, digital twins/shadow states, fleet-scale device management, telemetry pipelines, offline/intermittent connectivity handling, and OTA configuration and firmware updates

• Production-level experience with MQTT and gRPC

• Understanding of delivery guarantees, message sequencing, backpressure, and reliability patterns

• Experience with at-least-once and effectively-once processing, idempotency, deduplication techniques, transactional outbox patterns, retry and dead-letter management, partitioning, and ordering

• Proven track record with low-latency, concurrent systems

• Familiarity with Kubernetes and containerization

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD, and observability tools including OpenTelemetry and SLOs

• Knowledge of mTLS, certificates, OAuth 2.0/OIDC, secrets management, and threat modeling

• Willingness to travel 50%
