Lead Engineer – Instrumentation & Controls, Gas Power Generation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Act as a subject matter expert in the design of instrumentation and controls for gas plants, reciprocating engines, gas turbines, and related balance of plant systems and equipment.

• Create and assess instrumentation and controls designs, including the design controls for balance of plant systems.

• Collaborate with OEMs, clients, internal project teams, utilities, vendors, and engineering firms from third parties.

• Establish metrics and objectives pertaining to equipment protection and controls engineering responsibilities.

• Comprehend client design criteria, intent, design trends, philosophy, and specifications for gas generation plants.

• Travel to client offices and project sites as necessary, with travel demands increasing during construction and commissioning phases.

• Assist in root cause analysis for engineering and instrumentation and controls issues.

• Verify the controls and protection of equipment, safety standards, Management of Change, and adherence to industry regulations.

• Confirm design basis for power block instrumentation and controls through commissioning processes and documentation.

• Integrate instrumentation and controls with electrical design and commissioning units.

• Review electrical interface designs for balance of plant equipment and the integration of plant control systems.

• Assess new technologies and best practices to enhance project value.

• Create and manage libraries of design basis documents.

• Evaluate scopes from owners, contractors, companies, suppliers, and subcontractors for completeness and interface gaps.

• Contribute to constructability reviews of power block layouts, modular and skid-mounted equipment, and cable/conduit systems.

• Assist with onsite startup, initial fire, synchronization, performance testing, and commissioning needs.

• Serve as the primary escalation point for instrumentation and controls commissioning challenges.

• Review design, installation, commissioning, redundancy, winterization, loop diagrams, control narratives, and logic.

• Manage controller communication protocols and interface implementations, including DCS and OEM controllers.

• Verify the configuration of data historians and the availability of data points.

• Mentor junior engineers and uphold internal standards and practices for instrumentation and controls.

• Develop instrumentation and controls plans for proposals that emphasize redundancy, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

• Provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle and assess contract and subcontract implications.

• Travel up to 25% prior to construction and 70% during construction, depending on project requirements.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of progressive engineering experience in instrumentation and controls design for industrial projects, with a strong preference for power generation.

• More than 5 years of experience in instrumentation/controls/communications specification, procurement, installation, and commissioning.

• A Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution is required, or relevant equivalent industry experience.

• A Professional Engineering (PE) license is preferred but not mandatory.

• Proficiency in reciprocating engine and gas turbine equipment and related balance of plant equipment and applications.

• Understanding of MODBUS, Profi-Bus, Foundation Field-Bus, and other communication protocols and their integration.

• Familiarity with instrumentation and controls programming and commissioning tools for BOP equipment.

• Knowledge of Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS).

• Understanding of Emissions Control Systems, primarily Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

• Acquaintance with engineering standards and best practices in power generation.

• Ability to influence and guide groups toward shared objectives.

• Strong oral, written, listening, and presentation communication skills.
