Lead Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, test, and deploy production-quality code utilizing Java 17+ and Spring Boot as part of a delivery team operating in two-week sprints.

• Take ownership of technically intricate tasks from start to finish, encompassing API design, service decomposition, data access, and integration with established enterprise systems.

• Elevate engineering standards through practices such as code reviews, collaborative programming, and a focus on automated test coverage.

• Mentor fellow engineers by collaborating on real-world challenges.

• Act as a technical liaison with customer architects and technical personnel.

• Communicate technical risks, tradeoffs, and dependencies to stakeholders in engineering, product, and program areas.

• Contribute to the creation of system design documentation, architectural decisions, and technical discussions.

• Serve as a people manager for a small team of Ad Hoc engineers, overseeing feedback, performance and career development, timecard management, and PTO administration.

• Engage in candidate interviews and assist in the development and assessment of technical evaluations.

• Participate in technical solutioning and proposal development as required.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree with 9+ years of relevant experience in software engineering; equivalent professional experience may substitute for education.

• Currently engaged in hands-on work; has personally authored and released production code within the past 12 months and intends to continue doing so daily in this position.

• Over 8 years of practical Java development experience, including current work with Java 17 or later.

• More than 5 years of experience building production services using Spring and Spring Boot.

• At least 5 years of experience in designing and constructing REST APIs and web services within a microservices architecture.

• Over 5 years of experience with Oracle or a similar relational database, including ORM experience (Hibernate/JPA) and SQL performance troubleshooting.

• Proven experience in enhancing engineering quality on a team through testing practices, code reviews, or refactoring existing codebases.

• Experience mentoring engineers in a technical role.

• Extensive experience throughout the software development lifecycle, covering design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of articulating technical decisions, risks, and tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship, either now or in the future.

• Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

• Preferred: active, VA-adjudicated Public Trust.

• Preferred: familiarity with Kafka, Redis, Spring WebFlux, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, federal government programs, government contracting, cross-functional teams, and prior hands-on people management experience.
