Lead DevOps Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Manage a small team of DevOps and platform engineers by establishing expectations, providing feedback, and offering coaching.

• Supervise the Internal IT lead and manage the IT roadmap, priorities, budget, and escalation processes.

• Assess, scope, and prioritize DevOps tasks related to reliability, security, and cost management.

• Take responsibility for the on-call schedule and incident management; lead the resolution of major incidents and identify root causes.

• Collaborate with development and firmware teams to address hosting and pipeline requirements.

• Convey the roadmap, risks, and results; act as the primary technical liaison for AWS and vendors on a daily basis.

• Manage the multi-account AWS environment, ensuring reliability, deployments, and upgrades.

• Enhance the platform using Terraform across networking, EKS, and serverless solutions.

• Optimize CI/CD processes with CircleCI and GitHub Actions; lead financial reviews related to these processes.

• Administer Postgres, Redshift, Redis, and OpenSearch while maintaining clear SLAs and backup protocols.

• Oversee the observability platform utilizing ClickHouse and OpenTelemetry, including logs, metrics, traces, synthetic monitoring, SLOs, and actionable alerts.

• Manage the data platform, which includes Glue pipelines, Apache Iceberg lakehouse, Redshift, and CDC.

• Provide BI users with datasets that are traceable and manage data requests while adhering to strong privacy practices.

• Implement platform security measures encompassing identity management, secrets handling, hardening, vulnerability assessment, and incident response.

• Integrate security practices within CI/CD processes.

• Ensure alignment between IT and platform regarding identity management, access controls, joiner/mover/leaver processes, and compliance certification.

• Promote the adoption of AI coding and operational tools in DevOps while adhering to established guidelines and demonstrating measurable improvements.

• Execute the platform roadmap under the guidance of the Head of Software and Cybersecurity.

• Serve as the technical escalation point for platform-related issues.

⛳️ Requirements

• Demonstrated experience as a senior or lead DevOps engineer on AWS, including managing or leading team members.

• Proficient in Terraform and CI/CD methodologies, preferably with CircleCI or GitHub Actions.

• Hands-on experience with managing production environments using Kubernetes (EKS) and serverless architectures.

• Practical knowledge of observability tools such as OpenTelemetry and a modern tech stack, including SLOs and alert optimization.

• Strong background in Postgres administration.

• Experience in operating data pipelines or cloud data warehousing.

• Daily engagement with AI coding assistants and agents, with a thoughtful approach to their safe usage.

• Comprehensive understanding of cloud security practices.

• Willingness to participate in the on-call rotation.

• Excellent communication skills; adept at prioritizing tasks, engaging with stakeholders, and providing upward reporting.

• Desirable: Experience with ClickHouse, Redshift, or Apache Iceberg; AWS Glue or Spark.

• Desirable: Experience with the technical aspects of Cyber Essentials Plus or ISO 27001.

• Desirable: Experience working closely with or overseeing an internal IT function.

• Desirable: Advanced networking knowledge including VPC design, PrivateLink, and IPSec.

• Desirable: Proficiency in Bash and Python.

• Desirable: Familiarity with Node.js/TypeScript.
