Lead Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Design and construct the essential backend and platform from scratch, serving as the foundational systems upon which everything else relies.

• Create and deploy LLM agents that analyze complex, unstructured real-world organizational data, ensuring they are reliable enough to be trusted.

• Establish the foundational calls, architecture, infrastructure, and data tooling, setting high standards for engineering quality within the team.

• Function with complete autonomy. In a small team, your insights will directly influence the product, the codebase, and the company's direction.

⛳️ Requirements

• You have extensive experience in building and maintaining backend and platform systems at a significant scale, and you are the go-to person for your team when tackling the most challenging issues.

• Profound knowledge in Python, distributed/platform systems, API design, and SQL data stores, with the ability to take ownership of systems from design through to production.

• A proven history of leading ambiguous, high-impact projects from start to finish. You have established technical direction rather than merely executing on someone else's plans.

• Practical experience (or a strong, rapidly developing intuition) with LLMs, agentic frameworks, and RAG, coupled with an understanding of building reliable products on top of nondeterministic models.

• You prefer the scope, pace, and impact of an early-stage company rather than the structured environment of a large corporation.

• Have managed and operated systems at considerable scale within a robust engineering organization, at a Staff/Senior Staff/Principal-level capacity, regardless of title. We prioritize scope and impact over tenure or years of experience.

• Example indicators include roles such as Staff/Senior/Principal at Databricks, Snowflake, Google, Meta, Amazon, OpenAI, Anthropic, Stripe, Notion, Ramp, Scale AI, or as an early/senior founding engineer at a reputable VC-backed startup.

• The majority of your experience should not be from banks or financial institutions, slow-moving non-tech sectors, telecom, or government/transportation industries.

• Have been a technical leader, guiding direction, making significant architectural decisions, and facilitating others’ progress.

• Strong motivation for problem-solving and developing a thorough, first-principles understanding of any challenges encountered.

• High levels of agency and independence, able to define and solve problems without unnecessary reliance on others.

• Enthusiastic (not just willing) about working in an early-stage setting characterized by rapid pace, quick iterations, and significant ownership.

• Crucial: Depth in backend development, building resilient production systems, APIs, and proficiency in Python.
