Lead Backend Data Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Uruguay.

📋 Description

• Design and develop scalable backend systems utilizing Java.

• Lead the architecture and implementation of distributed systems in complex multi-service environments.

• Ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of large-scale data processing systems.

• Create and enhance concurrent and multi-threaded applications.

• Construct and maintain big data pipelines and infrastructure for high-volume data ingestion, processing, and storage.

• Oversee Kubernetes containerized workloads, deployment strategies, scaling policies, and resource management.

• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers on best practices for backend development, system design, and performance optimization.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams on service contracts, APIs, and integration patterns.

• Implement observability and monitoring solutions.

• Support production deployments and resolve complex issues.

• Lead initiatives aimed at continuous improvement.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive expertise in Java with a solid grasp of advanced language features and best practices.

• Proficient in concurrency patterns, multi-threading, thread synchronization, locks, barriers, mutexes, atomic operations, and volatile semantics.

• Demonstrated hands-on experience in designing and implementing distributed systems at scale.

• Strong SQL skills, including database query, schema design, and optimization.

• Practical experience with Apache Spark and Apache Airflow.

• Knowledge of Kubernetes for container orchestration and service management.

• Experience with system profiling, performance analysis, and optimization techniques.

• Familiarity with tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, or Loki.

• 5+ years of experience in Backend Engineering or related fields, including Systems Engineering or Full-Stack Development.

• Proven expertise in distributed systems and the design of multi-threaded applications.

• Advanced English proficiency required for effective communication within global teams.

• Experience with Spring Framework or other modern Java backend frameworks is advantageous.

• Familiarity with Kafka or event-streaming architectures is a plus.

• Knowledge of reactive programming frameworks or reactive systems design is a plus.

• Experience with Apache Pinot or similar analytical data stores is a plus.

• Familiarity with Terraform or Infrastructure as Code is a plus.

• Experience with CI/CD tools like GitLab CI, Jenkins (Groovy), or similar is a plus.

• Familiarity with GCP or other cloud platforms is a plus.

• Knowledge of AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot or Claude, is a plus.
