Lead AI Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Oklahoma, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the architecture for the Digital Worker platform and the AI functionalities integrated within Trio's products.

• Develop design principles, engineering patterns, and architectural standards for AI systems.

• Conduct technical design reviews and make trade-off decisions concerning quality, latency, cost, and operational complexity.

• Assess emerging AI technologies and establish priorities for adoption.

• Design and implement production systems utilizing LLMs, retrieval architectures, agentic workflows, and tool utilization.

• Create reusable frameworks for agent orchestration, tool integration, workflow execution, and memory management.

• Tackle the team's most challenging technical issues hands-on.

• Set standards for measuring AI quality, including accuracy, groundedness, safety, latency, and business impact.

• Develop and enhance evaluation frameworks to identify regressions and hallucinations.

• Drive quantifiable system-quality enhancements through experimentation and learning in production.

• Define standards for monitoring, tracing, and logging in production AI systems.

• Establish reliability and performance targets and act as a senior point of escalation for critical AI production issues.

• Enhance production readiness and AI lifecycle management as the platform expands.

• Mentor the AI Engineering team, fostering architectural judgment and engineering expertise.

• Lead code and design reviews while enforcing engineering standards.

• Collaborate with Product, Platform, Data, Security, and executive stakeholders.

• Translate business goals into technical strategies and communicate technical trade-offs in business terms.

• Expand the Digital Worker framework, evaluation infrastructure, platform orchestration, centralized inference, and retrieval and knowledge systems.

• Expected to take on formal leadership of the AI Engineering team as it grows.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Over 7 years of experience in software engineering, data engineering, or a closely related technical domain.

• At least 2 years of experience building and operating production systems powered by LLM.

• Demonstrated expertise in agentic systems, RAG architectures, or AI orchestration frameworks.

• Solid grasp of machine learning fundamentals.

• Strong fundamentals in distributed systems and software architecture.

• Professional proficiency in Python and comfort working in a polyglot environment.

• Proven track record in quantitatively evaluating AI system quality and acting on findings.

• Experience mentoring engineers on technical and architectural decisions.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of addressing both technical and executive audiences.

• Preferred: Master's degree in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, or a related technical field.

• Preferred experience includes team leadership or management, Azure cloud, Azure OpenAI, event-driven infrastructure, vector databases, semantic search, embeddings, enterprise knowledge systems, agent orchestration platforms, AI governance/security/compliance/responsible AI, .NET/C#, React/TypeScript, SQL Server, CosmosDB, Auth0, Azure DevOps, Datadog, and SaaS, workforce technology, healthcare, or high-growth technology organizations.
