This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Collaborates with designated AUSAs and/or supervisory attorneys to ascertain relevant administrative statutory and regulatory laws, while identifying potential defenses, violations, or causes of action.
• Cultivates a comprehensive understanding of all pertinent federal, state, and local laws, staying updated on any new criminal and civil rules and procedures.
• Notifies AUSAs of any possible issues during reviews, and analyzes and interprets data within the case file.
• Manages practices concerning 28 USC §2255 (habeas corpus) and immigration habeas matters, which includes receiving and docketing cases, scheduling due dates, communicating with the appropriate AUSA/Support Staff to locate necessary files for drafting responses, preparing draft responses for the AUSA's review, and ensuring timely filing of responses.
• The incumbent evaluates statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules and regulations, and law review articles as they pertain to assigned cases, including those that are particularly complex or unprecedented.
• Assists the AUSA by providing briefings on relevant facts, issues, and case law.
• Composes correspondence and legal documents for the attorney’s signature.
• Drafts proposed orders for judges and magistrates to sign.
• Must possess a Law degree or have completed a minimum of two years of study at an ABA-accredited law school.
• Must be licensed by a state bar.
• A valid State driver’s license is required.
• Minimum of two (2) years of professional work experience and expertise in fulfilling the necessary responsibilities.
• Works under the supervision of a Litigation Support Specialist 4 or a Project Manager.
• Conducts complex legal research for the trial staff.
• Aids in preparing draft legal documents, such as motions, briefs, and memoranda of law, among others.
• Screens documents for privilege.
• Assists attorneys throughout all stages of litigation.
• Requires a solid working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
• Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with a thorough understanding of standard legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
• Must have practical experience with various computer applications, including word processing, databases (like document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, and imaging.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
• Capable of making responsible decisions on short notice and adapting to unforeseen developments.
• Must be physically located within the general commuting radius of the USAO office.
• Additionally, requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of e-Discovery procedures and resources.
• DOJ MBI must be attainable (US Citizenship is required).
