Intermediate Backend Engineer, Git

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Engage in architectural discussions and make technical decisions concerning Git and Gitaly, influencing implementation choices that enhance correctness, performance, and maintainability.

• Contribute to the development of features, bug fixes, and performance enhancements for upstream Git, aligning with team and community objectives to deliver improvements in repository access and reliability for users.

• Modify Gitaly to effectively leverage Git features, incorporating newly available functionalities to boost scalability, efficiency, and long-term maintainability.

• Link discussions within the open-source Git project to GitLab's product strategy and engineering efforts, ensuring alignment of upstream contributions with product and platform requirements.

• Define tasks, estimate efforts, and outline implementation strategies that align with the team's priorities, facilitating predictable delivery of technical work.

• Test and verify the features you develop and integrate, emphasizing correctness and reliability to minimize regressions and support stable production operations.

• Collaborate with team members, contributors, and the broader Git ecosystem.

• Act as a constructive representative of GitLab within the open-source community, fostering productive relationships that encourage ongoing collaboration with the Git community.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in building instrumented, observable software systems.

• In-depth knowledge of Git internals, encompassing its code and data structures, or hands-on experience managing Git servers.

• Proficient in writing and testing production-quality code in C.

• Experience contributing to open-source projects, including Git or similar systems, and effectively collaborating in public spaces.

• Familiarity with Go for backend development and a solid understanding of Linux internals such as processes, memory management, input/output, and filesystems.

• A keen interest or experience in large-scale or distributed systems, storage formats, graph theory, or highly available production environments, including relevant backend or infrastructure experience.
