This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +3 more states.
• Drive efforts to enhance the complete indirect tax processes within solar EPC operations, encompassing sales & use tax and property tax.
• Standardize procedures across various projects, states, and business units to facilitate scalable growth.
• Recognize inefficiencies in procurement-to-pay, job costing, and tax accrual processes and execute streamlined solutions.
• Create and sustain SOPs and process documentation that aligns with SOX requirements.
• Collaborate with IT to deploy and enhance tax technology solutions (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, etc.) within ERP systems.
• Assist in ERP implementations and upgrades that impact project accounting, procurement, and tax.
• Automate tax determinations and reporting processes for high-volume construction transactions.
• Develop integration between procurement systems, fixed asset systems, and tax engines.
• Design, implement, and uphold SOX controls over indirect tax processes, including documentation, testing support, and remediation.
• Ensure compliance with multi-state sales & use tax regulations, especially in construction-dominant jurisdictions.
• Mitigate risk through enhanced taxability determination, exemption management, and contractor/vendor compliance.
• Collaborate with procurement and project teams to guarantee appropriate tax treatment of solar equipment (modules, inverters, trackers), materials, and construction services.
• Resolve complex taxability issues related to construction contracts, including lump-sum vs. time-and-material contracts and contractor versus owner tax obligations.
• Enhance processes for use tax accruals on untaxed purchases.
• Support tax treatment of inventory, work-in-progress, and capitalized assets throughout the project lifecycle.
• Ensure consistent tax handling across multiple concurrent projects in various jurisdictions.
• Improve processes for tracking and reporting solar assets for property tax purposes across jurisdictions.
• Ensure alignment between fixed asset records and property tax reporting for utility-scale solar projects.
• Identify opportunities to lessen property tax exposure through improved asset classification and data accuracy.
• Enhance the quality and accessibility of tax data across procurement, project accounting, and fixed asset systems.
• Create reporting and dashboards to facilitate compliance, accruals, and audit readiness.
• Serve as a key liaison among tax, finance, IT, procurement, and project management teams.
• Provide training on indirect tax requirements, processes, and systems to project and procurement stakeholders.
• Manage relationships with external tax advisors, compliance providers, and technology vendors.
• Monitor and report on key milestones, risks, and performance metrics to leadership.
• Support indirect tax process integrations for acquired businesses.
• Develop tax matrices and automation tools for internal team or business-wide use.
• Establish standard work documentation to create repeatable processes.
• Design training materials to assist in tax-related changes to business processes.
• Aid in data collection and reconciliations for tax audit responses.
• Conduct taxability research and analysis as requested.
• Prepare technical memos and documentation as necessary.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related discipline.
• A minimum of 7 years of experience in U.S. indirect tax (sales & use tax and/or property tax), tax technology, or process improvement.
• Strong knowledge of multi-state sales & use tax, particularly in construction or services environments.
• Experience in designing and implementing SOX controls and supporting SOX audits.
• Background in EPC, construction, energy, or other project-based industries.
• Familiarity with ERP systems that support procurement and project accounting.
• Proven experience leading process improvement and cross-functional projects.
• CPA or other relevant certification.
• Experience in renewable energy, solar, or infrastructure projects.
• Proficiency with tax engines (Vertex, Avalara, etc.).
• Lean Six Sigma or similar continuous improvement certification.
• In-depth understanding of indirect tax in construction and EPC settings.
• Skills in process optimization and systems thinking.
• Strong project management and organizational capabilities.
• Knowledge of SOX compliance and internal controls.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• High attention to detail.
• Exceptional communication abilities with the capacity to convey tax technical concepts to the business.
