
Indirect Tax Manager – Sales and Use Tax Audits

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan, +2 more states.
• Support and oversee state and local tax audits by assessing information requests, pinpointing exposure areas, and creating strategies to uphold the company's tax positions.
• Analyze extensive transaction records to detect patterns, exceptions, root causes, and opportunities for audit defense.
• Examine taxability determinations, exemptions, sourcing decisions, and classifications of products or services.
• Prepare thorough, audit-ready responses utilizing transaction details, exemption certificates, reconciliations, technical research, and supporting documentation.
• Execute reconciliations and assess potential audit exposures.
• Formulate tax positions and technical memoranda by applying statutes, regulations, administrative guidance, case law, and audit methodologies.
• Assist with settlements, appeals, and protests by compiling defensible workpapers.
• Act as the company representative in discussions with tax authorities.
• Collaborate with tax, accounting, FP&A, IT, legal, and operational stakeholders.
• Address business partner inquiries and offer practical, risk-based recommendations.
• Summarize audit findings and convey technical conclusions to both tax and non-tax audiences.
• Contribute to initiatives for process improvement, policies, controls, and procedures.
• Mentor team members and engage in special projects and additional assigned responsibilities.
• Report directly to the Director of Indirect Tax – Sales and Use Tax Audits.
• A degree or equivalent, typically requiring over 7 years of relevant experience directly managing sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, and business license tax audits.
• Experience in a multi-corporate, multi-state setting; preference for distribution or healthcare industry experience.
• Strong technical expertise in indirect tax audit practices and resolutions.
• Exceptional organizational and problem-solving abilities with a keen attention to detail.
• Capability to work across functions and influence outcomes without direct authority.
• Strong communication and presentation skills, effectively explaining complex tax issues to non-tax audiences.
• Ability to meet deadlines accurately in a fast-paced environment.
• Self-motivated and team-oriented individual.
• Experience with compliance activities, data analysis, and reporting.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office.
• Familiarity with SAP and Vertex is preferred.
• Knowledge of exemption certificate management systems and tax research tools (CCH, RIA, TTR).
