This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.
• Develop and oversee state data ingestion pipelines: utilize Python and SQL to ingest, normalize, and validate raw criminal justice data from state partners into the Recidiviz platform, effectively managing complex schemas, legacy formats, and changing data feeds.
• Take full ownership of your state portfolio: act as the main technical owner for 1–2 state partners, ensuring ingest quality, addressing data issues, and collaborating with State Engagement Managers, Product Managers, Data Analysts, and Software Engineers to prioritize technical tasks.
• Define and implement solutions in collaboration with states: work alongside state IT staff and agency leadership to comprehend data systems and constraints, define integration strategies, and convert partner requirements into precise technical plans.
• Lead initiatives from the backlog to production: autonomously select and complete scoped tasks—from code remapping and raw data documentation to new ingestion for recently signed states—with suitable guidance from your technical lead.
• Serve as a feedback conduit to product and engineering: relay practical insights from partner deployments back to our core teams, contributing to the platform's robustness, configurability, and scalability.
• Assist in onboarding new states: when new partners are signed, aid in ingest scoping and initial pipeline development, facilitating Recidiviz's swift transition from signed contracts to live data.
• High levels of empathy and kindness - a genuine concern for the mission and the people we serve.
• More than 2 years of experience in building, maintaining, or troubleshooting data pipelines within a production environment.
• Strong expertise in SQL and relational databases, with a keen interest in managing large-scale, complex data.
• Proficient in Python - capable of writing clean, testable scripts and pipeline code.
• Experience in cross-functional roles or customer-facing positions, with the ability to convey technical concepts to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
• Comfort in ambiguous situations: capable of navigating an undocumented legacy system, forming hypotheses, and writing code to validate them.
• A Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent experience.
• 90% coverage for medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents.
• Flexible time off policy, including 20 days of PTO, 3 days of paid volunteer time, and 13 paid holidays annually.
• 401(k) retirement plan featuring a 5% company match with no vesting period.
• 12 weeks of paid parental leave.
• Complimentary One Medical membership (availability based on location).
• Partnership with Carrot to offer inclusive fertility and family-forming benefits, along with a growing number of hormonal health and gender-affirming care benefits.
• Monthly ClassPass credit for personal wellness activities.
• Free mental health support through Talkspace.
• Well-located offices in Oakland and Manhattan, with the option to work remotely or in either office as preferred.
• An annual company offsite and various ad-hoc gatherings.
• Engage with the exciting challenges and growth opportunities of a tech startup, coupled with the mission-driven essence of a nonprofit.
