This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +2 more states.
• Fulfill all duties of a Project Engineer with a strong emphasis on substation design, construction, testing, and energization.
• Assess Power Purchase Agreements, Generator Interconnection Agreements, Utility Interconnection Requirements, Contract Documents, System Impact Studies, Facility Studies, and Owner/Engineer specifications to confirm compliance with substation scope.
• Supervise LNTP and Early-Stage deliverables for HV and substation-specific workstreams, ensuring consistency with permitting and utility interconnection schedules.
• Create, oversee, and monitor the substation budget, which includes primary equipment procurement, civil sitework, grounding systems, protection & control, SCADA integration, and construction labor.
• Develop detailed subcontractor scopes of work associated with substation EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) encompassing testing and commissioning.
• Direct and manage substation subcontractors—covering RFI coordination, billing reviews, change orders, daily reporting, safety performance, and schedule tracking.
• Track and manage changes in substation scope and their related commercial impacts.
• Lead and engage in Project Kick-Off Meetings, focusing on substation milestones and risks.
• Collect and manage RFIs and submittals pertinent to the substation, working with engineering and construction teams for resolution.
• Facilitate Utility Coordination Meetings centered on relay settings, protection schemes, testing protocols, switching orders, and managing the interconnection process.
• Take part in Owner Coordination Meetings to report on substation progress, risks, and technical challenges.
• Participate in SE team meetings to align interdependencies between PV, BESS, and substation infrastructure.
• Oversee material procurement tasks—especially for long-lead substation components like power transformers, breakers, steel structures, control enclosures, relays, and communication systems.
• Organize construction schedule and scope review meetings, emphasizing critical paths for substation construction and energization.
• Conduct site Kick-Off Meetings, Pre-Commissioning Walks, and Energization Readiness Reviews specific to HV equipment.
• Coordinate PV and substation energization support, including relay testing, functional checkouts, and utility witness testing.
• Manage the Final Completion Punchlist for all substation-related tasks and documentation (redlines, test reports, as-builts, relay settings, etc.).
• Ensure a secure work environment and enforce safety protocols around energized substations and high-voltage equipment.
• Maintain flexible availability for substation construction and commissioning activities, which may occur outside of standard business hours.
• Frequent travel is required to project sites, utility offices, and vendor facilities.
• Assist in continuous improvement, lessons learned, and standardization initiatives across substation projects.
• Carry out additional duties as assigned.
• At least 5 years of experience in substation design, construction, or commissioning for utility-scale or industrial high-voltage (69kV to 500kV) systems.
• Experience working within the Northeast Region of the country.
• Demonstrated capability to lead multi-disciplinary substation projects through their entire lifecycle—from kickoff to energization.
• Understanding of substation components: transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, grounding, control buildings, protection & control, relays, SCADA, etc.
• Experience in managing Transmission Line construction.
• Professional Engineer (PE) or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is preferred.
• NFPA 70E “Qualified Person” certification is preferred; must be knowledgeable about energized work practices and LOTO protocols.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities to handle client, utility, and subcontractor relationships.
• Capability to identify, prioritize, and address project challenges with minimal supervision.
• Solid working knowledge of utility operations, switching procedures, relay testing, and energization protocols.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with P6 scheduling is preferred.
• Familiarity with CAD, PDF markup tools, and field documentation platforms is an advantage.
