Head of Engineering, Data Platform

Posted 2 hours ago

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the data platform from start to finish — including architecture, tooling choices, and roadmap — with a focus on facilitating extensive, self-service data access across the organization.

• Actively engage with Snowflake and DBT, working directly with the team on builds, migrations, and optimizations.

• Consolidate and streamline a complex array of source systems and vendors into a cohesive, dependable data warehouse.

• Define and refine our data modeling strategy, including well-founded perspectives on mart/gold layer design — knowing when to enforce structure and when to allow flexibility.

• Make informed build versus buy decisions regarding tooling and vendor partnerships, evaluating these decisions based on business and operational outcomes rather than solely on technical sophistication.

• Design and enhance a data platform tailored for an AI-native organization — creating pipelines that support LLM applications, infrastructure that facilitates agentic workflows, and tools that reduce timelines from weeks to hours.

• Actively incorporate AI into your workflow and provide strong insights on how AI impacts the requirements of a data platform.

• Stay informed about how AI is transforming the function of data teams and translate that knowledge into actionable platform and staffing decisions.

• Frame every platform choice in terms of business results — operational efficiency, financial impact, and clinical outcomes. The data platform serves as a strategic enabler, not just a technical entity.

• Collaborate with business stakeholders to convert data requirements into platform functionalities without generating unnecessary friction or access obstacles.

• Ensure that progress and trade-offs are transparent to leadership as a natural outcome of your workflow.

• Lead and nurture a small, high-impact team; establish high standards for craftsmanship, communication, and accountability.

• Consider team composition thoughtfully: assess existing skills, identify gaps that need to be addressed, and plan hiring in alignment with the platform roadmap.

• Invest in the development of your team members, providing clear feedback, creating ownership opportunities, and fostering growth for those who can evolve with the platform.

⛳️ Requirements

• A background in engineering with extensive, hands-on experience in Snowflake and DBT.

• Demonstrated experience navigating genuinely complex data environments and diverse source systems, messy integrations, inconsistent data models, and real business logic embedded in pipelines. The complexity of your previous work is more significant than the volume or scale.

• A cross-domain background is advantageous; experience building intricate data platforms across various business contexts is a valuable asset. Familiarity with regulated areas (healthcare, financial services, etc.) is beneficial but not mandatory.

• A strong, well-reasoned perspective on data access philosophy; you advocate for broad availability of raw data to business users and can articulate your stance effectively.

• You have successfully implemented AI-backed data systems and pipelines for LLM applications, agentic workflows in data operations, or AI tools that fundamentally transformed your team's capabilities. Your understanding goes beyond basic usage, and you have informed views on the reliability of AI and its implications for data platforms.

• Proactive in governance; you document essential processes, automate where possible, and ensure that processes do not become bottlenecks.

• Experience in building and developing teams; you intentionally consider team composition, hire to fill gaps, and contribute to the growth of individuals.

• An exceptional communicator; you convey information clearly, directly, and succinctly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
