This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Gibraltar.
• Establishing the position of Head of Engineering, reporting directly to the CTO.
• Oversee engineering operations: the standards, practices, team dynamics, and overall delivery.
• Define engineering standards across the organization and manage the comprehensive Software Development Lifecycle from start to finish.
• Accountable for measuring the function's performance on predictable delivery: consistently delivering the agreed scope within the promised timelines, aiming for a 90% success rate.
• Manage the engineering tech-debt roadmap and provide leadership to the Engineering Managers responsible for delivery within each tribe.
• Involved in change management, incident response, observability, and ensuring audit readiness.
• Guarantee that 100% of changes automatically create a regulator-ready audit trail.
• Over 8 years of experience in software engineering, including 3–4 years in an engineering leadership position managing multiple teams or squads, specifically overseeing engineering managers rather than just senior engineers.
• Proven history of ensuring delivery predictability at the function level: you have made commitments on behalf of an engineering organization and established practices to consistently fulfill them without inflating estimates.
• Practical experience in developing and managing engineering practices: defining the SDLC, setting code review standards, overseeing change management, and maintaining effective retro and feedback loops.
• Strong leadership capabilities - you have recruited, mentored, and managed the performance of engineering managers, understanding the distinctions between effective EM execution and situations requiring intervention.
• A well-defined, evidence-based perspective on AI-assisted development throughout the SDLC - identifying where it truly adds value and how to promote genuine adoption as opposed to superficial dashboard usage.
• Comprehensive knowledge of backend distributed systems and the demands of operating them in a regulated, high-stakes environment: including change management discipline, incident response, observability, and audit readiness.
• Data-driven - adept at owning engineering metrics (delivery predictability, cycle time, defect escape rate, blocker aging) and transforming them into prioritized actions rather than mere dashboards that go unheeded.
• Excellent communicator who can effectively engage both technical and non-technical audiences - capable of writing the SDLC definition, presenting the tech-debt roadmap to the CTO, and delivering constructive feedback to an EM with equal clarity.
• Experience in a regulated environment (fintech, banking, payments, or similar) with a genuine understanding of the implications of quality or security failures when customer funds are involved.
• Excellent work-life balance
• Flexible paid time off plan
• Annual budget for personal learning and development objectives
