
Global Director, Indigenous and Community Leadership – Conservation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.
• Drive a comprehensive global strategy that enhances Indigenous and community leadership within TNC’s conservation initiatives.
• Shape TNC's approach to achieving its 2030 objectives and beyond through equitable, sustainable, and community-led results.
• Influence systems, financing, partnerships, and governance to support self-determined stewardship and rights-based methodologies.
• Collaborate with Equitable Conservation colleagues on a vision for biocultural restoration aimed at benefiting the planet.
• Lead and refine TNC’s global Indigenous and Community Leadership Council (ICLC) strategy, ensuring it aligns with team and organizational goals as well as external movements.
• Convert vision into practical frameworks, priorities, partnerships, and investments, including evaluation and adaptive management processes.
• Promote the integration of ICLC across conservation, climate, and policy programs, impacting high-level decision-making.
• Embed Indigenous and community leadership into essential programmatic strategies.
• Enhance strategies for governance and decision-making, funding distribution, finance mechanisms, and external collaborations.
• Position ICLC as a pivotal element for conservation impact and organizational transformation, shaping global and regional conservation strategies and outcomes.
• Strengthen the organizational capacity to effectively partner with Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
• Lead and manage a global, multidisciplinary, and geographically diverse team.
• Cultivate a high-performing, inclusive culture that aligns with TNC’s values.
• Serve on the Conservation Leadership Team and Equitable Conservation Leadership Team as an authority on Indigenous-led methodologies.
• Develop a succession strategy for ICLC leadership.
• Establish and maintain partnerships with Indigenous leaders and community organizations, alongside global NGOs, multilaterals, and funding entities.
• Represent TNC in global forums and influence broader conservation and climate sectors.
• Advance and support global fundraising and donor engagement strategies.
• Align resources and investments with ICLC’s global priorities.
• Ensure the effective delivery of programs and measurable conservation outcomes.
• Collaborate across Equitable Conservation and other TNC divisions, such as Global Protect, Provide, Climate, Science, Policy, and Public Funding and Impact Finance and Markets teams.
• Lead and contribute to enterprise-wide initiatives and cross-boundary efforts.
• Ensure a robust alignment between global strategy and regional execution.
• Bachelor’s degree and at least 7 years of experience as a leader in the conservation field, non-profit sector, advocacy, or related for-profit industries.
• A significant portion of experience acquired outside the U.S., particularly in the global south, along with a proven commitment to fostering and practicing global awareness.
• Management experience, including leading and overseeing a global multidisciplinary team.
• Experience working with or as a collaborator in global, matrixed organizations.
• Proficiency in written and verbal English is essential.
• Experience in people management, whether through direct supervision or project oversight.
• Executive decision-making capabilities and a tendency toward strategy-driven methodologies.
• Experience in communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences, including donors, board members, employees, external partners, or equivalent stakeholders.
