GIS Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Africa.

📋 Description

• Design, construct, and sustain Sun King’s internal geospatial data environment, bringing together electrification plans, socioeconomic datasets, grid maps, demographic layers, mobility data, and other spatial resources across various markets.

• Create and maintain geospatial databases with a strong emphasis on data quality, consistency, and accessibility.

• Incorporate Sun King’s proprietary data (including sales performance, agent networks, customer locations, asset positions, and operational activities) into GIS platforms.

• Optimize GIS workflows and develop custom scripts to enhance processing speed and efficiency.

• Collaborate closely with Data & BI teams to integrate GIS outputs into company dashboards and planning tools, such as Tableau or Power BI.

• Create or oversee interactive, web-based visualization platforms and layered GIS maps that merge demographic, economic, and infrastructure data for internal and external stakeholders.

• Work in partnership with software development teams to embed GIS data and market potential models into mobile applications utilized by field teams.

• Present intricate spatial insights in straightforward, actionable formats that empower non-technical teams.

• Equip internal teams with the skills to effectively utilize geospatial tools and outputs in their tasks.

• Manage relationships with external GIS partners, research institutions, and data providers.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing, Data Science, Energy Planning, or a related area.

• Experience in applying GIS within the energy sector, including electrification planning, grid expansion modeling, or off-grid market assessments.

• Proficiency in working with open-source and/or commercial GIS platforms (such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent enterprise systems) for modeling, data management, and spatial tasks.

• Experience in automating workflows using scripting languages, preferably Python (for instance, GeoPandas and related libraries).

• Knowledge of visualization and reporting tools like Power BI or Tableau for integrating spatial insights into organizational dashboards.

• Familiarity with African electrification and development datasets, including grid maps, electrification models, census data, night-time lights, demographic surveys (DHS, LSMS), and national energy strategies.

• Experience contributing to comprehensive GIS systems that correspond with broader organizational workflows, including exposure to cloud-based data pipelines and APIs (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).

• The capacity to collaborate across teams and translate spatial insights into clear, actionable outputs.

• Excellent communication and storytelling abilities, with the skill to use maps to convey compelling narratives.
