Freelance Ticker Copy Editor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Conduct newsgathering, fact-checking, headline crafting, and copy editing under high-pressure, minute-by-minute deadlines.

• Keep track of the sports calendar and live events to ensure the Ticker consistently delivers timely news, scores, and pertinent information to our audience.

• Guarantee that all content displayed in the Ticker is thoroughly researched, logically organized, grammatically accurate, and adheres to the department's editorial guidelines.

• Review headlines and text prior to publication to identify any potential legal concerns, including libelous statements or copyright infringements.

• Compose and set up alerts for breaking news, changes in network programming, and other major sports developments.

• Oversee and schedule promotional graphics for inclusion in the Ticker at specific times throughout the day and week.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 2 years of editorial experience, ideally in online or television media.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong organizational abilities.

• Experience with Content Management Systems (CMS) and online publishing platforms.

• Proficient in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

• Excellent critical thinking skills, sound news judgment, decision-making capability, planning proficiency, attention to detail, and a keen sense of urgency.

• Familiarity with utilizing social media, the internet, and various internal resources (e.g., AP sports wire) for newsgathering and research activities.

• Demonstrated knowledge of sports, encompassing a comprehensive understanding beyond just the four major professional sports leagues.

• Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required (this is non-negotiable).
