Freelance Contributor – Assessment Item Specialist, Social Studies

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop original, standards-aligned Social Studies assessment items, tasks, and stimuli that are meticulously aligned with state-specific standards and the C3 Framework.

• Choose and curate high-quality primary and secondary sources, including maps, charts, and historical documents, tailored to meet specific grade-level complexity and inquiry criteria.

• Transfer and format existing Social Studies assessments and items from district and state sources directly into the Formative platform.

• Create and configure technology-enhanced items (TEIs) within the platform, ensuring precise metadata tagging and impeccable technical functionality.

• Perform systematic quality assurance reviews of Social Studies content to guarantee all items are unbiased, culturally responsive, and adhere to stringent editorial standards.

• Validate content alignment and cognitive rigor by accurately assessing the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) for each assessment item.

• Offer expert feedback and recommendations regarding content tools and item bank features to continuously enhance development workflows.


⛳️ Requirements

• You are a professional assessment author with a minimum of one year of direct experience in writing and reviewing Social Studies assessment items on a commercial scale, such as for a respected EdTech company, testing vendor, or educational publisher.

• You are an assessment methodology expert with a thorough understanding of educational assessment design, including formative, common, and summative assessments.

• You are a specialist in standards and frameworks with extensive knowledge of state-specific social studies standards and the C3 Framework, along with a demonstrated ability to apply rigorous standards alignment principles.

• You show mastery in rigor and Depth of Knowledge (DOK), enabling you to accurately classify and create items that fulfill specific cognitive rigor requirements, particularly in the evaluation of historical evidence and civic reasoning.

• You possess skills in technical item production, with prior experience in authoring technology-enhanced items (TEIs) and are adept at navigating digital assessment platforms.

• You demonstrate editorial excellence through a comprehensive understanding of established style guides and best practices, including essential quality control elements like fairness, bias, and accessibility.

• You are a dependable content producer with a proven history of delivering high-quality work under tight deadlines and with meticulous attention to detail.

• Legally authorized to work in the US.
