Forward-Deployed Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Collaborate with operations teams and internal stakeholders for extended periods, gaining insight into intricate freight and supply-chain processes.

• Convert vaguely defined business challenges into precise technical solutions, determining when to enhance existing features and when to create new ones.

• Transform manual decision-making processes involving spreadsheets and emails into automated platform logic, increasingly managed by AI over time.

• Design and implement prototypes, automations, and production-ready features, ensuring integration with internal Zencargo services, carrier platforms, and third-party APIs.

• Leverage AI and modern development tools to speed up delivery and integrate them as fundamental components of the solutions developed.

• Work with both structured and unstructured data, including emails, documents, purchase orders, shipment data, and operational events.

• Evaluate and test solutions against actual workflows and user feedback, aiming for reduced manual effort, enhanced accuracy, quicker processing, and streamlined business operations.

• Recognize patterns across various issues and assist in transforming them into reusable platform functionalities.

• Engage closely with Product, Design, and core Engineering teams, as well as Data and Infrastructure teams that will assist in your projects while you maintain delivery ownership.

• Clearly communicate technical decisions, constraints, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including executives.

• Uphold high standards for security, reliability, data protection, and maintainability, supporting solutions throughout their implementation and early adoption.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive professional software engineering experience throughout the entire lifecycle, confident in taking a problem from discovery to independent building, deployment, and operation in production.

• Proficient in at least one modern programming language, such as TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, Kotlin, or C#. Familiarity with Kotlin or Python, our primary languages, is appreciated but not mandatory.

• Experience in developing and utilizing APIs, webhooks, and system integrations.

• Background in working with databases, data models, and event-driven workflows.

• Proficient use of AI-assisted development tools as a central aspect of your development process. This is critical for the role.

• Strong product insight: quickly comprehends unfamiliar business processes, integrates with teams to identify key elements, and distinguishes immediate user requests from the root issues.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and making informed decisions without needing perfect requirements, favoring action, experimentation, and iterative delivery.

• Confident in engaging directly with operational users and senior stakeholders, collaborating with Product, Design, Engineering, and our Data and Infrastructure teams, while clearly explaining technical concepts in practical terms.

• Strong sense of ownership, including accountability for whether the solution meets its intended goals, not just for the delivery of code.

• Solid understanding of software quality, observability, testing, security, and maintainable architecture.

• Experience in freight, logistics, or supply chain, or within another B2B SaaS or operational technology setting.

• Familiarity with building workflow automation or orchestration, utilizing tools like n8n.

• Experience with large language model applications and challenges related to unstructured data, such as document extraction or email classification.

• Experience integrating with ERP, transport management, warehouse management, or internal operational systems.

• Background in solutions engineering, implementation, internal tools, or forward-deployed roles, including adapting bespoke solutions into products.

• Knowledge of cloud infrastructure, Terraform, CI/CD, and production support, preferably in early-stage or high-growth environments.
