This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversee, document, and report on commercial fishing activities during offshore surveys and construction projects.
• Act as the main liaison between representatives of commercial fishing vessels operating in the survey area and the survey team.
• Mitigate and document any interactions that occur between survey operations and commercial fishing activities.
• Record the date, time, and location of any fishing vessel activities, fixed gear, or interactions with survey gear, as well as visibility, sea state, and other environmental conditions.
• Effectively respond and communicate with any fishing vessels near construction or survey operations using VHF radio or single sideband radio.
• Maintain a keen lookout for fishing activities or fishing gear in the vicinity of the operational vessel.
• Inform the vessel captain, crew, and survey team of any fishing activities or gear observed, and advise them based on information received from communication with fishing vessels.
• Perform protected species observations and serve as a backup for the Protected Species Observer (PSO) monitoring team.
• Must possess current STCW Basic Safety Training (BST), GWO, or BOSIET training completed within the last 2 years.
• Must hold current CPR/First Aid certification.
• Must have a valid Passport.
• Must be able to identify the various types of commercial fishing gear used in the US Atlantic.
• Preference will be given to candidates with experience on commercial fishing vessels.
• Required familiarity with handheld GPS, ship plotters, ship communications (single sideband and VHF), and binoculars with reticules.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word is necessary.
• Must be certified by a physician as fit for sea duty, including the ability to not be susceptible to chronic motion sickness.
• Ability to live in confined quarters is required.
• Capacity to handle stress effectively is necessary.
• Ability to lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds is essential.
• Must be able to monitor the waters surrounding the observation platform/vessel vigilantly for up to 4 hours at a time, not exceeding 12 hours within a 24-hour period.
• Must not be affiliated with any group that could compromise the objectivity or the appearance of objectivity.
• Offshore experience in the field is mandatory.
• Proof of eligibility to work within the US is essential.
• Protected species observing (PSO) certification is preferred but not mandatory.
• Equipment will be provided.
• Meals and lodging will be supplied on the vessel.
