Financial Controller

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close for all Lazer entities.

• Prepare financial statements, management reports, and conduct variance analysis.

• Uphold accounting policies, maintain working papers, and ensure a transparent audit trail.

• Complete or review accounting tasks directly when necessary.

• Manage accounting for time-and-materials, fixed-fee, and retainer engagements.

• Oversee work in progress, unbilled revenue, deferred revenue, and revenue recognition judgments.

• Conduct project reviews with delivery leaders focusing on revenue, costs, margins, utilization, and labor economics.

• Identify budget overruns, change orders, and billing discrepancies.

• Assist in forecasting, scenario analysis, pricing decisions, and evaluating business performance.

• Review client contracts and statements of work to ensure proper revenue recognition, billing terms, and collectability.

• Supervise cash management, banking, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll functions.

• Standardize invoicing and collections processes for project-based work.

• Lead the annual audit and act as the primary liaison for auditors, tax advisors, banks, and finance partners.

• Coordinate Canadian tax and compliance obligations, including GST/HST, year-end filings, SR&ED support, and cross-border or multi-entity needs.

• Establish effective controls for a growing remote organization.

• Evaluate the finance stack and prioritize operational enhancements.

• Automate reconciliations, closing tasks, reporting, and recurring workflows.

• Leverage AI to minimize manual tasks and enhance analysis, documentation, and decision-making support.

• Develop reliable data flows between finance, delivery, sales, and personnel systems.

• Collaborate with the CFO and Finance Manager as a senior member of a compact team.

• Translate financial outcomes into actionable recommendations for business leaders.

• Question assumptions and pursue issues to resolution.

• Help shape Lazer’s finance team, systems, and operational model for future expansion.

⛳️ Requirements

• CPA designation is mandatory.

• A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in accounting and finance.

• Experience overseeing the financial close and reporting as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Senior Accounting Manager, or similar role.

• Practical experience in a lean finance team, preferably in a startup, scale-up, technology, consulting, or professional services environment.

• Strong technical accounting judgment.

• Familiarity with audit, tax, controls, and multi-entity reporting.

• Experience with project or contract-based revenue, including time-and-materials, fixed-fee, or retainer engagements.

• Understanding of how delivery decisions impact margins, cash flow, and revenue recognition.

• Excellent analytical skills with the ability to convert transaction details into business insights.

• Comfort in navigating evolving processes and ambiguity.

• Strong judgment, sense of ownership, and confidence in constructively challenging senior stakeholders.

• Proficient spreadsheet skills and experience with Xero or a similar cloud accounting platform.

• Demonstrated experience in enhancing finance systems, closing processes, reporting, or data quality.

• Practical experience utilizing automation or AI in finance.

• Strong written and verbal communication abilities.

• Capability to explain accounting matters to non-finance colleagues.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a remote-first organization.

• Experience in a Canadian company with US operations, customers, or team members is beneficial.

• Experience with ERP systems, close management platforms, reporting tools, or finance workflow implementation is an asset.

• Experience in supporting financing, acquisitions, due diligence, or investor reporting is advantageous.
