This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Assist in the organizational budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities alongside the CFO and department leaders.
• Collaborate with program teams to formulate annual program and departmental budgets, oversee expenditures, and evaluate financial performance against established plans.
• Generate monthly budget-to-actual reports, conduct variance analyses, and prepare financial forecasts to aid the leadership team and program staff in making informed decisions.
• Oversee financial administration for grants from foundations, government, and international donors, which includes budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and tracking of restricted funds.
• Work with Development and Program teams to create proposal budgets, monitor donor requirements, and ensure that all necessary documentation is complete.
• Evaluate spending, cost allowability, and compliance with approved budgets, donor regulations, reporting deadlines, and organizational policies.
• Prepare requests for donor funds, manage partner disbursements, and facilitate timely financial reporting, audits, and inquiries from funders.
• Assist in monthly and year-end closing activities, which involve journal entries, reconciliations, and reviewing financial transactions.
• Act as a trusted financial partner to program leaders and non-financial staff, aiding colleagues in understanding financial information and making data-driven decisions.
• Discover opportunities to enhance financial processes, reporting tools, and workflows to boost efficiency, transparency, and usability across the organization.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field, along with 5–7+ years of finance or accounting experience within the nonprofit sector, particularly in grant-funded settings.
• Proven experience managing grants from foundations, government, and international donors in a multi-donor funding landscape (e.g., USAID, EU, UN agencies, or other bilateral or multilateral funders).
• Understanding of donor compliance, financial reporting, cost allowability, and audit requirements associated with government or international funding.
• Proven track record in budgeting, forecasting, financial planning and analysis, and translating financial data into actionable insights for organizational leaders.
• Experience as a collaborative business partner to programmatic and non-financial staff, with the capability to clearly communicate complex financial concepts and foster strong cross-functional relationships.
• Familiarity with financial accounting systems and general ledger software; experience with Intacct or similar nonprofit accounting systems, Blackbaud, Expensify, and Questica is preferred.
• Advanced proficiency in Excel is required.
• Background in preparing program, departmental, and grant budgets, including indirect cost methodologies, shared cost allocations, and management of restricted funding.
• Strong financial analysis, accounting, and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail and the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience in utilizing technology and financial systems to enhance reporting, streamline processes, and boost the efficiency and effectiveness of finance operations; familiarity with Intacct or comparable nonprofit accounting systems is highly desirable.
