This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +2 more states.
• Take charge of the complete lifecycle of Avalara's AI workflow infrastructure, including n8n and associated tools.
• Conceptualize, establish, deploy, and manage infrastructure and platform components such as environments, CI/CD, containers, runtime clusters, storage, secrets, networking, and integrations.
• Develop a secure, enterprise-grade AI workflow platform across development, testing, and production environments.
• Integrate security, privacy, compliance, hardened baselines, secret management, network and IAM boundaries, along with CI/CD safeguards.
• Define and drive service level objectives (SLOs), metrics, logging, alerting, incident reduction, and improvements in mean time to recovery (MTTR).
• Create reusable templates, reference pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (IaC) modules, and guardrails for standardized AI workflows.
• Align AI workflow infrastructure with Avalara's Software Maturity Model and engineering governance.
• Guide engineers and citizen developers, while codifying best practices in DevOps, automation, and AI.
• Utilize AI for incident triage, anomaly detection, capacity forecasting, change-risk assessment, IaC, CI/CD, security policies, runbooks, and orchestration patterns.
• Collaborate with architecture, security, platform, integration, operations, and business teams.
• Achieve measurable enhancements in reliability, deployment success, cycle time, automation coverage, scalability, and operational excellence.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 5–8+ years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or platform engineering for SaaS or large-scale distributed systems.
• Direct responsibility for production environments.
• Strong expertise with AWS, Azure, or GCP, including VPC design, security groups, load balancers, and managed Kubernetes or equivalent orchestration.
• Extensive hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or similar tools.
• Proven management of CI/CD pipelines, such as GitLab CI/CD, including automated testing, security scanning, and artifact management.
• Solid understanding of Linux and/or Windows operating systems.
• Knowledgeable in DNS, TLS, routing, firewalls, and secure secret management.
• Practical experience with logging and monitoring tools like Sumo Logic, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, or their equivalents.
• Experience in defining meaningful SLOs and production alerts.
• Background in running or supporting multi-tenant or shared platforms utilized by various teams.
• Demonstrated use of AI tools in daily engineering or operations with measurable outcomes.
• Experience in mentoring engineers and assisting citizen developers who are new to agentic AI and automation concepts.
• Effective communication with engineering, security, operations, and business stakeholders.
