This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +3 more states.
• You will act as the technical lead for the infrastructure and core components that operate n8n and associated AI workflow tools—covering environments, CI/CD, containers, runtime clusters, storage, secrets, networking, and integrations—ensuring their resilience, scalability, and cost-efficiency.
• You will integrate security, privacy, and compliance into the development and operation of AI workflows: implementing hardened baselines, secret management, network and IAM boundaries, along with CI/CD safeguards to prevent unsafe changes from reaching production.
• You will establish and monitor SLOs, metrics, logging, and alerting for the AI workflow platform, transforming incidents into systematic enhancements that gradually lower MTTR and change failure rates.
• You will develop and enforce reusable patterns (templates, reference pipelines, IaC modules, guardrails) to ensure that teams leveraging n8n and other tools adhere to consistent, auditable practices rather than custom one-offs.
• You will collaborate with architecture, security, and platform teams to align AI workflow infrastructure with Avalara's Software Maturity Model and engineering governance, advancing the platform and guiding teams towards higher maturity levels.
• You will enhance the way teams create and manage automations by mentoring engineers, documenting best practices, and utilizing AI tools to significantly improve the speed, quality, and reliability of the AI workflow platform.
• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 5–8+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or platform engineering for SaaS or large-scale distributed systems, with direct responsibility for production environments.
• Extensive experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP), encompassing VPC design, security groups, load balancers, and managed Kubernetes (EKS/AKS/GKE) or similar container orchestration technologies.
• In-depth hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or equivalent) for managing multi-environment infrastructure and platform services.
• Proven track record in managing CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI/CD or similar), including automated testing, security scanning, and artifact management for complex services or platforms.
• Strong understanding of Linux and/or Windows, networking basics (DNS, TLS, routing, firewalls), and secure secret management practices.
• Practical experience with logging and monitoring solutions (e.g., Sumo Logic, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar) and defining meaningful SLOs and alerts for production systems.
• Demonstrated experience managing or supporting multi-tenant or shared platforms utilized by multiple teams (internal developer platforms, workflow/orchestration tools, or integration platforms).
• Evidence of actively using AI tools in daily engineering or operations (beyond experimentation) with a clear positive impact on speed, reliability, or quality.
• Health & Wellness Benefits vary by location but generally include private medical, life, and disability insurance.
• Paid time off
• Paid parental leave
• Many Avalara employees are eligible for bonuses.
