Engineering Team Lead, AI Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Assemble and guide a team of platform engineers, defining the technical vision, performing code reviews, and mentoring engineers as the team expands.

• Establish and develop the application-layer foundation for AI at Roofr — creating the essential integration patterns, agent architecture, and shared abstractions that product teams throughout the organization will utilize.

• Lead the integration architecture strategy — making key decisions on how Roofr's product interfaces with AI services and third-party systems, and setting the standards for how the engineering team works with AI.

• Design and oversee our third-party integration layer, creating scalable and reliable patterns for connecting Roofr to external services and APIs.

• Develop the data pipelines that support our AI features — including structured data feeds, embeddings, retrieval infrastructure, and more.

• Take significant responsibility for platform reliability, performance, and the developer experience — the teams relying on your work depend on it.

• Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to define the AI roadmap and assist the wider organization in understanding possibilities.

• Navigate a developing codebase and help promote architectural consistency across domains with varying degrees of maturity.

• Set standards and best practices for AI development at Roofr — covering everything from SDK design to observability and reliability.

• Assess emerging models, frameworks, and tools and make informed, pragmatic decisions regarding their adoption.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of software development experience, including more than 3 years in a technical leadership capacity.

• Hands-on experience in building production AI systems — you have deployed agents, integrations, or AI-powered features at scale, rather than simply experimenting with APIs.

• In-depth knowledge of LLM APIs and agent frameworks (e.g., Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, LangChain, or similar).

• Experience in creating evaluation pipelines and quality benchmarks for LLM-powered systems.

• Strong expertise in integration architecture — designing dependable, extensible connectors to third-party services.

• Experience in developing data pipelines that support AI systems, including knowledge of RAG, embeddings, and vector search patterns.

• Proficiency in backend engineering with a proven history of developing scalable systems — full-stack experience is advantageous.

• Familiarity with PHP/Laravel is a plus; what is most important is your experience in building scalable backend platforms and your ability to learn the technology stack.

• Demonstrated ability to take ownership — you consider the long-term health of your work, care about quality, and think beyond individual tasks.

• Comfort in being a strong individual contributor while also supporting and mentoring a team.

• Excellent communication skills — you can clearly explain complex technical decisions to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.

• Experience in an early-stage or high-growth company, thriving in the fast-paced and ambiguous environment that it entails.

• A genuine enthusiasm for the possibilities of AI — along with the pragmatism to implement it effectively.
