📋 Description

• Oversee a team of senior and staff engineers focused on the Git version control system and related infrastructure.

• Cultivate a team culture that prioritizes technical excellence, accountability, and ownership.

• Lead the execution of complex, long-term projects related to performance, scalability, maintainability, and the core architecture of Git.

• Assist the team in balancing upstream open source development with GitLab’s product and infrastructure priorities.

• Aid in the professional growth of your engineers through constructive feedback, mentoring, career development, and challenging opportunities.

• Encourage effective written communication and asynchronous alignment within a fully remote team.

• Collaborate with downstream teams such as Gitaly and other stakeholders who depend on Git expertise for performance, feature design, and roadmap clarity.

• Represent the team effectively in discussions with cross-functional partners regarding Git direction, performance, and scalability.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in managing engineering teams with direct reports, encompassing hiring, performance management, and career growth.

• A management approach that focuses on fostering engineer agency and ownership, supported by consistency, follow-through, and sound technical judgment.

• Demonstrated capability to guide specialized engineers through uncertainty, structured discussions, high-stakes technical decisions, and the complexities of upstream open source development, including community review and extensive feedback cycles.

• Strong written communication skills and proficiency in remote, asynchronous collaboration across distributed teams in multiple time zones. You are adept at advancing work through documents, issue threads, and asynchronous reviews, not solely in meetings.

• A history of delivering results under pressure on ambiguous, long-term technical projects with defined outcomes, and a solid understanding of maintainability, technical debt, and long-term platform sustainability.

• Practical experience in version control systems, distributed systems, storage engines, or other low-level infrastructure areas, with the ability to engage confidently with systems code and architecture, preferably in C, Go, or similarly performance-sensitive languages.

• Comprehensive benefits to promote your health, financial stability, and overall well-being.

• Flexible Paid Time Off.

• Team Member Resource Groups.

• Equity Compensation & Employee Stock Purchase Plan.

• Growth and Development Fund.

• Parental Leave.
