This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• As an Engineering Manager at UW, you will instill clarity, consistency, and momentum within your squad.
• You will set the direction, uphold high standards in delivery and quality, and balance immediate objectives with long-term sustainability.

• You will communicate effectively across various levels, manage complexity, and continuously evolve as a leader to empower your teams to perform at their best.
• You will take ownership of the technical decisions made by the squad, ensuring they are in line with both company and technical strategy.
• You will establish team goals and guide prioritization within the team to effectively attain those objectives.
• You will collaborate with the Product Manager and team to set objectives and key results (OKRs) that align with the company's goals, while identifying and mitigating risks and blockers early on.
• You will ensure that the squad possesses the technical expertise needed to achieve objectives, developing skills within team members or hiring as necessary.
• You will assist in resolving interpersonal conflicts and will gather, share, and act on feedback.
• You will work collaboratively with cross-functional colleagues, including those in UX and data.
• Technical Mastery: Proficiency (experience is a plus) in our core tech stack, including gRPC, GraphQL, React, Kafka, Docker & Kubernetes, with a preference for experience in Go.
• Proven experience in leading the team's technical design process, facilitating design discussions, and representing the team in cross-functional technical dialogues.
• Ability to drive technical decisions toward clear, well-documented outcomes by assessing options, trade-offs, and next steps when team consensus is lacking.
• Experience in validating designs and architecture against real-world edge cases and domain variations to minimize preventable rework.
• Capability to own technical decisions, ensuring alignment with product and engineering strategies.
• Strong knowledge of engineering best practices, with a proactive approach to identifying areas for improvement.
• Hands-on experience with AI development tools; we value engineers who incorporate AI into their daily work and view AI-assisted software development as a future cornerstone of engineering.
• Experience in defining team goals and driving prioritization to achieve them.
• Proven experience in creating clarity amidst competing priorities, technical options, or complex legacy system migrations that may threaten focus or timelines.
• Ability to collaborate with Product Managers in setting OKRs that align with company objectives.
• Experience in co-leading annual and quarterly planning sessions.
• Experience in identifying risks early and implementing mitigations.
• Proven ability to enhance delivery predictability by surfacing risks early and adjusting or sequencing scope to protect commitments.
• Experience in identifying best practices for security and SLOs.
• Capability to drive operational excellence and lead metrics reviews.
• Experience managing a team of engineers.
• Established ability to onboard, train, develop, and coach team members, as well as participating in performance calibration and promotion reviews.
• Intermediate awareness of customer and market insights.
• Ability to communicate strategy effectively to the squad.
• Experience in building extensive domain knowledge of the squad’s area, focusing on real customer, partner, and operational scenarios beyond the ideal path.
• Ability to proactively address ambiguities or incompleteness in requirements or designs to catch issues prior to development.
• Experience working within complex, multi-variant domains (such as billing, pricing, identity, or claims) where managing intricate logical edge cases is vital.
• Proven experience in fostering a healthy team dynamic and resolving interpersonal conflicts.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across various functions.
