This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• You will enhance the team’s technical excellence by making sound architectural choices, elevating engineering standards, and ensuring our systems are resilient, scalable, and adaptable.
• Your influence will refine development workflows, minimize friction, and foster an environment where engineers can operate swiftly without sacrificing quality.
• You will bolster our operational readiness by enhancing incident playbooks, observability, and team preparedness.
• Through effective communication and structured planning, you will facilitate predictable delivery, improve alignment with stakeholders, and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement.
• Your leadership will significantly enhance reliability, developer experience, and long-term product stability.
• You will manage a team of approximately 4–6 software engineers, balancing hands-on technical leadership (around 40%, including coding and technical decisions) with people management, planning, and delivery execution.
• Collaborating effectively with product managers, other engineers, and business stakeholders on various projects.
• Guide the team toward practical architectural decisions that consider scalability, security, cost, and simplicity.
• Establish and uphold coding standards, patterns, and best practices through insightful code reviews and comprehensive documentation.
• Identify workflow bottlenecks and spearhead improvements to tooling, automation, local environments, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Maintain clear, actionable incident playbooks and enhance monitoring and alerting to reduce noise and bolster confidence.
• Decompose work into well-defined increments and support predictable delivery through robust planning and risk management.
• Champion reliability by ensuring services meet SLOs, have meaningful observability, and undergo effective post-incident improvements.
• Automate manual or repetitive processes to enhance engineering efficiency and minimize operational toil.
• Clearly communicate technical decisions, risks, and trade-offs to Product and cross-functional partners.
• Ensure adherence to engineering governance controls, testing requirements, and stage gates.
• Extensive experience in a software engineering leadership role.
• Experience working in a shared responsibility leadership environment (Engineering, Product, Design, and Data), with strong accountability for your discipline.
• Familiarity with leveraging AI and LLM tools and developing AI-powered customer-facing features.
• Ability to utilize data and anecdotal evidence to drive change.
• Capability to adapt as priorities and needs shift while maintaining focus on long-term strategy.
• A curious mindset: Eager to explore the unknown and bold enough to disrupt established workflows, while bringing that attitude to your teams.
• Unyielding focus on business and customer impact over mere technical output, thriving in a fast-paced environment.
• Full Stack / Backend: Background in highly scalable systems, preferably built using Ruby on Rails.
• Front End: Strong experience in developing business system web applications, preferably with some knowledge of Ember.
• Experience in building systems on the AWS stack is preferable.
• Foster an inclusive and diverse culture, in alignment with the Henry Schein One values.
