Engineering Manager, AI Engineering – Chat

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North America.

📋 Description

• Lead a team of skilled frontend, backend, and AI engineers to fulfill GitLab Duo Chat roadmap objectives throughout the DevSecOps lifecycle.

• Collaborate with product and UX teams to establish requirements and deliver AI functionalities that meet customer demands and enhance answer quality.

• Engage in technical architecture and development tasks for systems that operate AI agents at scale, emphasizing reliability, performance, and maintainability.

• Direct daily operations by providing clear guidance, monitoring progress towards milestones, and eliminating obstacles to ensure timely delivery.

• Mentor engineers through constructive feedback, guidance, and discussions that promote individual growth and overall team effectiveness.

• Foster a team culture rooted in curiosity, inclusion, accountability, and consistent achievement of team objectives.

• Enhance quality, testing, and performance practices to boost coverage, improve observability, and ensure the reliability of AI-powered chat workflows in production.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience managing engineering teams in a distributed setting and facilitating effective team performance.

• Strong foundational knowledge in software engineering with the ability to engage in technical discussions and assess engineering trade-offs.

• Practical experience with agentic AI or generative AI as it pertains to software development processes.

• Proficiency in navigating ambiguity, evolving requirements, and dynamic product development environments.

• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities across engineering, product, design, and other relevant stakeholders.

• Commitment to mentoring engineers and fostering an inclusive, supportive team atmosphere.

• Ability to balance people management responsibilities with hands-on technical involvement in daily development activities.

• Willingness to consider transferable experience from diverse technical backgrounds that align with the management of AI-driven product teams.
