Engineering Director

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Lead a group of over 7 teams to achieve significant outcomes, directly supervising Engineering Managers and Staff Engineers.

• Cultivate an environment of mentorship and coaching, emphasizing the professional advancement and leadership skills of your direct reports.

• Collaborate with Product Directors and VPs to align project roadmaps with commercial objectives, customer requirements, and technical strategies.

• Contribute to enhancing the overall engineering function, working with peers and setting an example, including leveraging the evolving AI landscape.

• Foster a "customer outcome" mindset, ensuring teams are focused on addressing the right challenges rather than merely delivering features.

• Balance the importance of commercial delivery with the need to manage support, technical debt, and architectural risks effectively.

• Navigate and resolve issues pragmatically, offering clarity and guidance to your teams when the paths forward are unclear.

• Monitor the overall health of your teams through effective data utilization to drive measurable improvements.

• Act as a point of escalation for issues and incidents within your teams, ensuring sustainable preventative measures and learning from post-mortems.

• Contribute to our strategic direction, providing a technical viewpoint for investment planning and scenario modeling.

⛳️ Requirements

• Outstanding people management experience, with a proven history of developing and enhancing managers and senior individual contributors.

• Extensive experience in leading multiple teams while collaborating with peers on standardized work practices and organizational development.

• Demonstrable instances of leveraging data and metrics as a motivator for continuous improvement rather than as a punitive measure for management.

• Proven capability to collaborate with and effectively challenge Product leaders to balance commercial value with technical sustainability.

• Examples of operating with urgency while thriving in a high-autonomy, high-ambiguity environment.

• Real-world experience in guiding teams through organizational transformations, process modifications, or rapid scaling challenges.

• Demonstrated success in building high-performance engineering teams without sacrificing speed or autonomy.

• Exceptional communication skills, able to advocate for technical excellence and build credibility with engineers while influencing direction upwards.

• A solid foundation in modern software architecture, maintaining technical credibility and trust with senior individual contributors.

• An understanding of how AI-first engineering will transform the SDLC and the ability to lead through change in the absence of a playbook, ideally with examples.
