This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Compose rapid, high-quality commentary for subscribers on breaking, developing, and agenda-setting news stories, focusing on producing content that provides interpretation, analysis, and value rather than merely summarizing events.
• Identify subscriber-relevant angles on significant stories from the United States and around the globe, and develop them into concise commentary pieces featuring a clear thesis, strong framing, and an authoritative voice in line with Newsweek's standards.
• Deliver clean copy swiftly under deadline pressure, encompassing first drafts, rewrites, and updates, while ensuring accuracy, clarity, balance, and robust structure throughout.
• Accept briefs and editorial direction from senior editors, responding constructively to line edits and feedback, including revising introductions, nutgraphs, headlines, structure, framing, and emphasis as necessary.
• Create commentary that articulates the significance of a story for subscribers by outlining the context, stakes, implications, and forthcoming developments readers should monitor.
• Assist in packaging stories within the CMS, which includes writing or refining headlines, decks, standfirsts, captions, links, keywords, and other metadata to ensure that subscriber content is thorough and ready for prompt publication.
• Collaborate with editors to verify that stories are visually and editorially complete at publication, including identifying appropriate art, embeds, related links, or other presentation elements when suitable.
• Support the subscriber newsletter workflow by suggesting stories, drafting summaries, writing display copy, and aiding in material preparation under the guidance of senior editors.
• Occasionally provide assistance for other formats upon request, such as short videos, talking points, or basic editorial input for audience-facing promotion of subscriber journalism.
• Stay informed about the live news agenda and highlight timely subscriber commentary opportunities or follow-up ideas to senior editors.
• Exercise sound media law and standards judgment in daily editorial decisions, including awareness of defamation, privacy, reporting restrictions, copyright, and fair use, and escalate concerns swiftly when necessary.
• Utilize AI tools responsibly and in accordance with editorial best practices, including careful verification of outputs, appropriate disclosure or attribution where relevant, and strong human oversight of all published work.
• Collaborate with editorial, newsletters, video, and audience colleagues as needed to execute assignments and support an efficient subscriber workflow.
• Undertake any other reasonable duties as necessary to fulfill business needs.
• Proven knowledge of the news agenda in the United States and internationally, with the ability to discern which developments are most pertinent to a subscription audience.
• Extensive experience writing quickly and accurately in a digital news setting, including under breaking-news pressure and meeting multiple deadlines during a shift.
• Demonstrated capability to write commentary, analysis, or interpretive journalism that exceeds summary and provides readers with a clear, valuable perspective on events.
• Strong sourcing instincts and a deep commitment to accuracy, fairness, and transparency, including recognizing when additional context, balance, or stakeholder comments are necessary.
• Familiarity with CMS publishing workflows and the editorial details that enhance publication quality, such as metadata, links, visuals, tags, captions, and story presentation.
• Demonstrated interest in or experience with subscriber products, newsletters, audience-facing packaging, or other journalistic forms aimed at enhancing engagement and retention.
• Experience in video, audio, social, or other multi-format journalism is beneficial but not essential.
• Working knowledge of media law and editorial risks, with the confidence to appropriately flag concerns and seek guidance when necessary.
• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the professionalism to operate calmly, accurately, and constructively under pressure.
