Distribution Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.

📋 Description

• Develop and prepare construction packages for distribution voltage projects, including both overhead and underground initiatives, such as installation of distribution equipment, feeder and cable replacements, and pole replacements as part of an infrastructure enhancement program.

• Assist in the design of distribution lines within the voltage range of 2.4kV to 34kV.

• Collaborate with Designers and Engineers to create new drawings, modify existing ones, or produce as-built documents.

• Aid in the preparation of proposals, engineering/project cost estimates, and execution timelines.

• Offer technical support to customers and contribute to regional business development efforts.

• Conduct quality reviews of work produced by others and adhere to the QA/QC process.

• Prepare calculations and assist with specifications for equipment.

• Assess the loading of various equipment components, such as transformers and pole structural loading, to ensure a safe, reliable, and cost-effective design in alignment with client specifications.

• Visually inspect and document equipment and various construction scenarios in the field, including rights-of-way.

• Apply National Electric Safety Code (NESC) Standards, Client Standards, Federal, State, or Local Guidelines, and other relevant protocols to complete engineering designs (Pole Replacements, Communication Space Rearrangements, Joint-Use Design) for potential joint-use or make-ready construction.

• Analyze field-collected data (including imagery) and accurately update relevant software for successful design implementation.

• Regularly use Client proprietary software or equipment to fulfill daily responsibilities in the engineering design workflow, which may include managing new attachment permitting processes.

• Take responsibility for assigned work, ensuring completion within project schedules and budgets while maintaining consistent communication with the management team.

• Frequently engage with Client(s) regarding engineering designs to identify the most cost-effective solutions for their projects.

• Provide timely and detailed documentation to Orbital accounting functions to ensure projects remain on budget and properly accounted.

• Record data methodically by transcribing notes and using measuring devices for inspections.

• Must be adaptable to work in various weather conditions and across residential, commercial, and industrial sites as required.

• Primarily remote/office-based work, with occasional fieldwork needed throughout the engineering design process.

• Willing to travel overnight or for extended periods based on project requirements.

• Required to attend meetings at client locations and regularly engage with the general public, including landowners and operators.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering from a four-year ABET accredited institution, preferably in electrical engineering.

• Experience or foundational knowledge of concepts within the electric utility sector, including primary and secondary distribution systems and utility standards.

• Preferred completion of the Engineer in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam from a state licensing board.

• Preferred possession or willingness to obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license from a state licensing board.

• Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

• Strong attention to detail, along with facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving capabilities.

• Ability to manage multiple projects and effectively communicate their status.

• Proficiency in computer skills, including general Microsoft Office applications, distribution design software, GIS, and other business enterprise software.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

• Reasoning abilities and capacity to solve practical issues.

• Competency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings/schematics.

• Familiarity with electrical distribution assets and/or construction of communication equipment is preferred.

• Experience with pole loading software (Spida Calc, O-Calc, Pole Foreman, or Katapult) or other construction modeling tools (AutoCAD) is advantageous.

• Knowledge of industry utility or joint-use software (SPANS, NJUNS, IkeGPS) for make-ready engineering and construction is beneficial.

• Acquainted with Design and Checking practices for engineering drawings and deliverables.

• Knowledgeable about Safe Work Practices and PPE applications.

• Must possess reliable transportation and hold a valid driver’s license with insurance.

• Must be able to pass a fit-for-duty test.

• Capable of working from both home and an office setting as needed.
