Distribution Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.

📋 Description

• Develop and prepare construction packages for distribution voltage projects, both overhead and underground, which include the installation of distribution equipment, feeder and cable replacements, and pole replacements as part of an infrastructure enhancement program.

• Support the design of distribution lines ranging from 2.4kV to 34kV.

• Collaborate with Designers and Engineers to create new drawings, amend existing ones, or generate as-built documents.

• Assist in drafting proposals, estimating engineering/project costs, and scheduling execution timelines.

• Provide technical assistance to customers while supporting regional business development efforts.

• Conduct quality reviews of work completed by others and ensure compliance with the QA/QC process.

• Perform calculations and aid in specifying equipment.

• Assess the loading of various installed equipment components such as transformers and the structural loading of poles, ensuring designs are cost-effective, safe, and reliable while adhering to client specifications.

• Visually identify, inspect, and document equipment and various construction scenarios in the field, including rights-of-way.

• Implement National Electric Safety Code (NESC) Standards, Client Standards, and other relevant guidelines to execute engineering designs (e.g., Pole Replacements, Communication Space Rearrangements, Joint-Use Design) for potential joint-use or make-ready construction.

• Analyze field-collected data (including imagery) and accurately update relevant software for effective design implementation.

• Regularly use proprietary software or equipment from the Client to fulfill daily responsibilities within the engineering design workflow, which may involve facilitating new attachment permitting processes.

• Take responsibility for assigned tasks, ensuring completion within project timelines and budgets while maintaining regular communication with the management team regarding progress.

• Frequently engage with Clients on engineering designs to identify the most cost-effective solutions for their projects.

• Provide timely and detailed documentation and support to Orbital accounting functions to ensure projects remain within budget and are appropriately accounted for.

• Transcribe notes and utilize measuring devices to systematically identify, inspect, and record data.

• Must be prepared to work in various weather conditions and across residential, commercial, and industrial areas as necessary.

• Primarily remote/office-based work, with fieldwork required throughout the engineering design process.

• Willingness to travel overnight or for extended periods based on project needs.

• May require attendance at client meetings and regular interaction with the general public, including landowners and operators.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from a four-year ABET accredited college or university in Engineering, preferably electrical.

• Experience or fundamental understanding of concepts in the electric utility sector, including primary and secondary distribution systems and utility standards.

• Preferred completion of the Engineer in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam from a state licensing board.

• Either hold or be willing to obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license from a state licensing board.

• Basic understanding of engineering theories and principles.

• Strong attention to detail along with facilitation, team-building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving abilities.

• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects effectively while communicating project status.

• Proficient in computer applications, including general Microsoft Office products, distribution design, GIS, and business enterprise software.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong reasoning skills and capability to resolve practical problems.

• Competency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and schematics.

• Preferred working knowledge of electrical distribution assets and/or communication equipment construction.

• Beneficial experience in pole loading (Spida Calc, O-Calc, Pole Foreman, or Katapult) or other construction modeling software (AutoCAD).

• Knowledge of utility or joint-use software (SPANS, NJUNS, IkeGPS) for make-ready engineering and construction is advantageous.

• Familiarity with Design and Checking practices for engineering drawings and deliverables.

• Knowledgeable about Safe Work Practices and PPE applications.

• Must possess reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and insurance.

• Must be able to pass a fit-for-duty test.

• Ability to work from home and in an office setting, as required.
