Director, Product Design

📋 Description

• Lead and nurture a team of product designers across various product pods, taking direct responsibility for hiring, performance management, and career development.

• Collaborate with the VP of Design to shape design strategy, organizational structure, and the evolution of the design function.

• Foster an environment that empowers designers to excel: align stakeholders, manage cross-functional dependencies, and provide clarity on ambiguous projects.

• Establish and maintain high standards of craft across the platform — including interaction patterns, visual execution, design system standards, and long-term product quality — ensuring consistency as the team and product areas expand.

• Define the operational framework for product design at Givebutter, outlining how the team integrates AI tools and designs for AI-enhanced product experiences.

• Serve as a strategic design partner to senior Product and Engineering leaders, influencing cross-functional decisions and aligning teams toward common goals.

• Shape product strategy by leveraging deep insights into our users (fundraisers and donors), translating complex cross-product challenges into clear guidance for the team.

• Make critical design decisions that balance craftsmanship, speed, and business impact, maintaining a company-wide ownership mentality.

• Cultivate and advance Givebutter's design culture as the team expands, establishing practices, norms, and rituals that adapt and scale.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in product design, including 3–5 years in a managerial role overseeing other designers.

• A robust portfolio showcasing design leadership across intricate, multi-surface product environments with demonstrable impact on users and business results.

• Proven track record in developing designers at various career stages and intentionally building team culture.

• Profound craft sensibility. You can articulate what "excellence" entails in interaction design, visual design, and design systems, and uphold that standard across the team.

• Experience collaborating closely with Product and Engineering leadership as a strategic partner, shaping roadmap and product direction through design insights.

• Strong prioritization skills. You understand when to dive deep, when to delegate, and how to direct a team towards the most impactful work.

• Excellent communication skills. You can convey a clear narrative to an executive audience and provide actionable feedback to a junior designer on the same day.

• Comfort operating in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment where priorities shift and speed is essential.

• Genuine understanding of how AI is transforming design, both in crafting AI-driven experiences and in the daily workflow of designers.

• Experience in SaaS or B2B products is required; experience in the nonprofit or social impact sector is a plus. Strongly preferred experience in designing AI-native, automation, or agentic product experiences.
