Director, Platform Systems

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the strategy and implementation for Root's platform engineering and AI engineering divisions.

• Lead teams focused on AI enablement, CI/CD pipelines, AWS infrastructure, and the data engineering platform.

• Collaborate with Product, Data Science, Quantitative Science, Security, and business leaders to synchronize platform priorities with key opportunities.

• Create and refine a talent strategy within a multi-team engineering organization.

• Set standards for reliability, security, and operational excellence across shared infrastructure and AI systems.

• Drive the roadmap for the AI platform, including internal tools, data infrastructure, and deployment methods for AI-driven features.

• Promote developer productivity by minimizing toil, speeding up feedback loops, and establishing engineering benchmarks.

• Nurture engineering managers and develop the leadership pipeline.

• Collaborate with Engineering leadership to enhance organizational effectiveness.

• Identify and eliminate systemic obstacles while managing cross-functional alignment where platform systems intersect with product delivery.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 12 years of experience in software engineering in both individual contributor and management roles.

• More than 7 years of experience as a people manager.

• Experience in managing other managers.

• Proven success in leading platform, infrastructure, or AI/ML engineering teams.

• Experience in defining technical strategy in areas such as developer tooling, cloud infrastructure, data platforms, or AI systems.

• A demonstrated history of developing engineering managers.

• Experience in creating high-performing, inclusive teams.

• Exceptional communication and influencing skills with engineering colleagues and executive stakeholders.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and making well-reasoned decisions with incomplete information.

• Candidates must appear on camera during virtual interviews.
